What to do with unsightly pool paving?

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering what suggestions you may have about changing a pool area that is currently paved (and tired looking). What are the budget friendly options? We don't mind spending more than "budget", but definitely not into the high-end.

I was thinking of artificial turf, however have read that going over pavers might not have sufficient drainage.

What has everyone else done in this situation? Below is the area we are wanting to cover (and yes, that horrible silver pool fencing is coming down...

I think the problem is that you have two different coloured materials abutting each other without enough contrast. The coping around the pool edge looks like a nice quality terracotta paver with a bull-nose edge in a sandstone colour. The rest of the paving looks like a standard terracotta brick paver.

As you are on a budget I would keep the bull-nose edge material and replace the brick pavers with a large format concrete paver in a grey similar to the existing mortar colour. Replacing the bull-nose pavers is labour intensive and expensive. This will provide good contrast, visually tie in with the edge, and provide a cost effective, non slip surface.

If you were looking to us artificial grass you would most likely need to take up all pavers except the pool coping. I know that "GrassCel" in Sydney use their recycled material, grass and driveway stabilizer turned up side down to form a flat draining base for artificial grass cheers

The first photo is of the pavers we love, next to the already established honed concrete. Second photo of the house, the area we need to complete is currently covered in carpet. The third photo is of the paving sample sitting on top of an exposed aggregate concrete sample. We probably like this one the most out of all the exposed aggregate samples we looked at, but we are not totally into it. On the right side of the picture is the established honed concrete.

Yes - there are these amazing options to have an 'electric pool cover' with a slat arrangement that allows you to virtually walk on it. Do a google search...'pool covers electric'... I've no idea on how much they cost... Here's some pics. Not sure if irregular shapes make this too challenging... Our pool experience... We are needing to change a few things with our pool already - wish we had paid more attention to the pipes and filtration... (Having to potentially move them as they are too shallow and in 'awkward spot'... Extra $ and I'm so worried it may cause issues for us... Even the location of the concrete slab for the pump... Wish we had thought about overall picture... If I was buying a car for $70k, I would have done more research, but somehow we got carried away with idea that we could have a pool for summer, and yet reality is that it's ready for the 'next summer'... Budget plan (original) was around $30-40k, but I guess it's like building a house... Plus it's all a big learning experience...

Hi Julie I like the way you think! Love both ideas. I am having a deck and patio built at the back of the house ,the work is under way, I will talk to my maintenance man and ask for a price. It may work partly because of the $800 transport cost to get the pavers here. Thanks!

It's time to relay our crazy paving and put in a new underlay(ants, weeds and undulating surface...) Do we reuse our natural stone paving or get new pavers like to rest of town? Taking into account that the going price to relay(That's not lift, clean and prepare) is 100-150 per sqm compared to 80 to buy new pavers and have them laid. Big question is are they too busy? Is it a niche market that appreciates them for resale? What to use in the adjoining pool area? (Buying more at 130per sqm out if the question)
