Wanting advice on window furnishings

I am currently looking at replacing the window furnishings in our living/dining room. I'm just not really sure what avenue to pursue. We live in a small town outside of Brisbane with beautiful views of the hills and whilst privacy isn't really an issue, the summer sun does hit this side of the house which turns it into an oven for the day.
I love the look of s wave sheers and I'm thinking of pairing those with blockout roller blinds (and panel curtains in the same fabric for the sliding door) to protect against the sun during summer. If I go with this option, should I hang the sheers from the ceiling or just above the window frame? If I go with the latter, how much higher from the window frame should I go?

I'm also open to any other suggestions anyone might have for alternative window coverings!

It very much depends on what your house is like, how oriented, and what your personal tastes are. We go for simple and clean lines, so we have roller blinds. Others like a more sumptuous look, so have drapes and sheers. Ours is a modern house, so shutters would look silly; on a more traditional style, they look fine. We looked at a lot of houses before we ended up deciding to build; in looking at all those houses, we got a sense of what we liked and didn't like in terms of finishings. You might hit a few open houses and take a good look at things like window finishings, especially in houses that are your style. You'll pick up lots of ideas and it'll be easier than trying to sort through advice from people like me;)

Amanda, it looks like you are having a pergola built as part of the extension. Is that right? It looks like some form of roofing has yet to be done for it. ?? Will want to take this into consideration when choosing exactly how much light you want to filter. I must say I do like look of the blinds shown above, especially ones with filter options and mounted under cornice.

Hi Georgia, The brick is quite dominant. You could paint out the 2 small side walls to match the rest of the walls in the room. The main fire place you could do the flooring; up to the mantel height you could either leave the brick as is as maybe white wash it to make it less dark, or you can clad it with a tile of stone. Replace the mantle timber wish something that is the full width of the fire place so that it creates a separation point. Paint the brick above the mantle either the same colour as the rest of the room or something complementary. There is always the option of plasterboard so you don't have as much texture visible. For curtains, the best option would be for ceiling mounted track, curved at the corner. The stackback area to the left is tight to fully open the curtains off the window area. A possible solution (as you look to be in the middle of renovations), if there are no utilities in the last 20-30cm of the bulkhead to the exterior(?) wall, you maybe still at the stage to alter this to provide a pocket area for curtains to stackback into. There are other considerations for an area that poses a few challenges and obtaining expert advice now could provide better solution that require some input from your builder.
