Industrial Chic: Polished Concrete Floors - Yes or No
Comments (10)Hi bagpu55, thanks for your comment, you will find that the level of scratches that come through on the sealer will depend on the type of gloss sealer used. Polyurethane or solvent based sealers last a lot longer and are much more durable, even with animals present. Having said this, the negatives are that solvent based products take some time for the strong smell to escape in a confined environment and are not the most eco-friendly of products. And eventually the scratches will come through particularly in high traffic areas. As for the dust, the gloss will show it a bit more. Based on the fact that you do have a number of animals in your home, you probably will not regret going with the matt finish. The concrete won’t have the ‘wet’ shinny look, but you also won’t be sitting on your couch possibly looking at a lot of scratches on the floor when the light hits it just so. A possible compromise is a satin finish sealer. It will provide some shine and enhancement to the floor without showing as many scratches. I hope this helps you out a bit. Good luck with your choice and post some pics of what your finished floor looks like. Always great to see the finished product!...See MoreStudio floor is concrete, help!
Comments (9)A lot of tradespeople like welders, cabinetmakers, etc. are on their feet all day on concrete so I don't think thats the real issue. It isn't the prettiest space at the moment thats for sure. I'd polish the concrete. This will really make a great spot as paint may just wipe straight up if some gets spilt. If the polishing is too expensive a pressure clean and then a satin clear seller will look great. An alternative would be a marmoleum type of floor covering if you really hate the concrete. Look at 'Forbo'. Sixties beach shack..... I'm jealous by just hearing those words.........See MoreStudy - polished concrete or carpet?
Comments (12)Thanks @philippawright. Our concrete will be full exposure of the aggregate, so lots of movement and interest. We would definitely use a rug in this room if we did not have carpet. No messy hobbies in here. The room will be used as a study for my husband and I and will double up as a small sitting room (library and TV) with two armchairs. We have four bedrooms in our house so don't anticipate using this room as a bedroom. But you never know. Our style is modern, not industrial, but a touch of luxe with hand blown glass feature pendants, and timber accents. It was always going to be carpet. But the levels have left me confused. If the concrete polishers can grind the concrete down so that is is recessed, and there will be minimal step up from hallway to carpet, then I'll probably stick with carpet. Do you think this is a good plan?...See MorePolished concrete: Show me some pictures!
