Show us your outdoor dunny!
Comments (9)A CELEBRATION OF THE GREAT AUSTRALIAN DUNNY In 1984 bought more than half an acre on a corner of a main arterial in a small country town. The house was on the top of the hill and the dunny-laundry half way down the paddock. No plumbing. It snowed the month after I moved in. Grandma's commode, given to me by my wise elderly Aunt, became very handy indeed. Visitors from the USA came to see what I'd done as cousing all born with silver spoons in their mouths thought it rather. Lady wanted to go "to the bathroom". I sent her to the bathroom. She returned looking perplexed whilst the rest of the company waited with baired breath..."but....???" OHH..you meant the Dunny! Sorry about that!. Gave her a jacket and a beanie and a pair of boots and pointed her to the small building in the middle of the paddock called "The Viewing Room". By then it was more than "bits of wood and woolsack with odours on the breeze" but not exactly what she was expeting. The "Night Man" had been the previous night....not a "long drop" bit a tin can that got emptie about 3a.m....so a little less of a shock. Tghe lid was wooden with a crack just where one did not need a crack...poor woman. I'd purchased some toiklet seat liners that one carries to utilise in public toilets, had to explain what they were! Mission accomplished, She returned to wash her hands in my poorest of the poor bathrooms and said....but I thought IT would have been in the bathroom! Lengthy explantion ensued.......how would the Night Man get in to empty it etc,,,etc...None of this pioneering made sense. Finally the sewerage came to town and the dunny was moved to inside. The day was a town celebration. A competition was launched to give a prize to the best inside dunny. Here's mine....See MoreDecor ideas for this cabinet nook
Comments (19)Agree with some of the ideas already mentioned of artwork (maybe 3 small framed prints or photos hung vertically given the light you intend to install?) to fill the wall space, tiered stand with fruit, cook books on one shelf and the other can be used for storing stationery, mail etc using a stacked set of drawers (some nice ones available at the stationery/office suppliers). You can hang removable hooks inside the door for keys. I'm not a fan of having "stuff" (papers, keys) on bench tops as it quickly turns into a dumping area and in a thoroughfare, things end up on the floor as people rush past. Best of luck - your kitchen is gorgeous by the way!!...See MoreWe're new to renovating and would love your advice
Comments (94)Just to confirm I have taken the great ideas presented here as advice only and have no intention to do some dodgy diy reno's. With the exception of a couple of quirky exposed timbers as you can see in my pictures there are no other exposed beams. As you can also see from the pictures there is a large roof space on the right (east) side of the house but the ceilings themselves are flat with a slight dip on the north wall. Based on my own personal experiences I would have to agree with Two's Company that there is a tendency towards rendered brick in WA (although there are still many exposed brick houses in my suburb) while double enclosed double garages are also highly desirable. I would also agree that toilets within the main bathroom and non traditional laundries may be considered unusual by many (but not all). Ensuites with toilets however are still very common. Also due to the nature of our work we would prefer the laundry separated from food/kitchen area. For a 4x2 house it is only around 155m2 excluding carport/alfresco which makes the rooms feel quite cramped, hence the desire to open up the family room. However, as Two's Company suggests we will need to first get a builder/eng in to check load bearing walls etc as this will undoubtedly affect what we can achieve within our budget. Having said that I still excited by many of your ideas and with luck hopefully can work some of them into the budget. Cheers all :)...See MoreWould love ideas about roof over front door. Too many roofines
Comments (12)Thank you so much for everyone's thoughts, it has honestly been very helpful. We are going to consider going right across the front of the house and over that problematic front door. Going to consider going across with the same space as we originally had going straight out. I'll keep everyone posted as I so appreciate all the help!!...See Morejulie herbert
