Hi fellow Houzzers, Could I please have some suggestions on whether to use a standard opening door, a pocket door or outside sliding door on my bathroom which is in a granny flat with only one bathroom toilet and vanity and why it is designed this way to be able to use the bathroom independently from toilet and vanity basin. I would like suggestions as to what would work for the door. The house frames and trusses aren't built yet but slab is poured, frame construction starts 7th January, build starts 14th January the bathroom has a shower with a hob wall and a free standing bath under the window it is a small bathroom and while I am lamenting the fact I didn't ask for advice regarding the layout earlier before plans went to council etc. I am hoping it will still look okay. Also I wouldnt mind some suggestions for tiles etc. I would like a black bath exterior and greys and whites with tiles any suggestions here would be appreciated. Below is a plan of said area the wc is 1700mm internal the bathroom is 2000mm x 2950 internal there is a 600mm linen cupboard beside the vanity and the other door shown is the entry from my sewing room and a shared laundry. Also what style of interior doors look good in a new home. I added this outside sliding door just to give some idea as to what I was thinking of. Cheers Rose
with such generous spaces it would be possible to have a wider tall linen storage at the end of the shower and have the option of an extra wide vanity cabinet with storage underneath and consider space for an underbench washer or a stacked washer dryer to make a fully self contained granny flat...choice of doors would depend on how the rooms are used but i would choose hinged doors into the toilet and bathroom (cheaper labour to install, quieter, easier handles to use, better for moisture and sound control and the back of the door is an ideal spot for a rack or hooks for clothes and extra towels ... the door from the hall into the vanity area could be any types but depends how likely the door is to be closed but cheapest to install would be hinged, then external slider then cavity slider but always consider solid core doors for a better quality result and love the look of the doors in your photo but always good to have an idea of costs for each door for comparison as it can be a big investment when you may need many doors but i have no problem some doors being decorative and some cheaper plain doors but always prefer solid core doors
and hopefully there will be some other suggestions for tiles and colour schemes
Thanks oklouise I really like your suggestions. i wasn't going to put a door into the vanity and toilet area only bathroom and toilet and leave the other area open I like the suggestion of a linen at the end of shower but the floor slab is already poured with 50mm step down to allow for shower drain and fall. The shower has a hob wall no shower screen a lot of homes where I live are being built with the hob wall like the photo below mine would have the wall other end and the door would open against it, also no step into shower like the one shown. I am going to price the solid core doors this week my son is an owner builder and having trades do the work on the house we have quite a job ahead of us it has meant we've had to become very familiar with building terms and practices.
if possible try and avoid the hob on the shower floor as it can be a trip hazzard and we discovered that a walk in floor with an old fashioned shower curtain provides the best combination of safe access, protection from over spray and economy but our latest purchase of solid core doors were about $200 each compared to the cheapest hollow doors at about $30 but well worth the extra
Ok that is a big difference one of the hollow doors I have been looking at is the woodgrain finish with 4 panels on it I think they are maybe around $50 or $55 I will look into this further as i will have a total of 5 interior doors and it probably would be worth the extra money. Yes I definitely want a flat entry into the shower I've not had any experience with walk in showers and no glass so hoping a 1.1 wall is enough to stop any over spray
