How can we make our small open plan 2 bedroom beach house bigger?
Comments (27)Hi arcmaz Great house - fantastic 60's modern look - Harry Sidler (Modernist Architect 1923-2006 exponent of the Bauhaus style in Australia, mainly Sydney) would have loved the interpretation, its a good style, don't change it will pay dividends in the long run. It would be good if there was a plan of the house, and a plan of the block this would allow some relatively accurate planning proposals. If you had the real-state plan with the block plan it would help a lot. In terms of making the place bigger and retaining the style I would suggest that the extension (maybe one room and an en suite depending on a budget) be a block in the today's current style, but linked to the existing house via a "link" (Link =small walkway). This would allow you to retain the style, but not be dominated by a past period, I have done this a few times and it has worked fairly well. If you are looking for three bedrooms it might be best to add a master bedroom with a bathroom, and then maybe living areas with back yard access. There may be other approaches depending on the current layout that could be considered, but I would retain as much as the original as possible, and only make small cosmetic changes until you are ready for a worthy development. I hope this is of some help, I would be happy to comment further or work on this project. Comments (22)Selling a second-hand door can be quite tricky as not all doors are the same size in width, height and thickness. The market is limited to those who are happy to make a custom frame for it as it is likely that it won't fit into a standard door frame. Despite the craftsmanship I would not expect top dollar, and would let the market decide via auction, such as Ebay. Such a pity as it has so much character, is such a conversation piece, and is not a generic door. Best of luck, Dr Retro of Dr Retro House Calls...See MoreFront Yard design
Comments (6)Something very simple and neat - and with perhaps contemporary pickets in black with flat tops. It looks like you are attached to the house next door, so the appearance of that house needs to be taken into account too. Its hard to see what you mean about it not being perpendicular, or where the fence will go exactly - can you take a photo from further back please. If you need a professional I would suggest a landscape gardener. It's a gorgeous looking house....See MoreHow should we style our hallway?
Comments (16)I like Julie’s idea for multiple matching frames down the left side of your hallway. It could be just enough to draw your eye down the hallway, without changing the depth of the space (that adding a console table would do). I would suggest adding the artwork/photographs (at eye height) along the majority of the wall space (odd numbers look the best; 5, 7 or even 9 prints!) to invite your guests into and along the space. See how it looks with just the artwork added first, before deciding if you even need a console table as well. Good luck!...See MorePummers
