Our front living room needs help!

Hello Houzzers, I would love some advice on furniture layout, and decorating ideas for our “formal” living room. This room does not get a lot of use, however, it is the room into which we and our visitors enter our home and would like to create a warm homey feel.
We plan to build a floor to ceiling built in bookcase where the TV is and possibly paint the walls a dark teal (if brave enough) and also new longe suite/chairs, rugs etc.
Where the tapestry is is “dead space” & would like to do a gallery wall with hubbies artwork etc. the furniture that needs to stay is the clock and the spinning wheel (family heirlooms). As for the rest, ie the buffet (maybe keep) or the old ice chest? Which one? I would also love a piano.
Yes, my taste seems to be rather eclectic, classic/traditional but would like to update and add some modern elements (bring in some gold?)

Your room is lovely, I agree with KK by painting the walls teal it would darken the room, you could add teal in cushions and throw, to add a more modern look add a gold trimmed mirror above fireplace, this will reflect more light, new light coloured furniture would look beautiful, floating shelves for hubby ‘s art, tv built into bookcase would look great, you can mix your precious things with a few modern elements to create a gorgeous front room .

Comments (10)On a budget I would just add identical frames with pictures around the TV. 2 on the sides and 4 along the top. I like the clean lines of the current TV stand but it would look better against your floors and with your furniture if it was painted a dark brown. I think a round side table next to the chair would look very nice and tie in with the ottoman. Other options would be to create a built in for the TV with shelves on either side. If you face the back of the lounge to the door, that can help create a separate space, too. Comments (9)I would relocate door and entry to be beside bedroom wall and maybe add a wall to define the spaces. The 'new' entry area could be made into a nice area without being too big. It could be 1200 wide and 1560 long, just enough to circulate guests into the house without walking directly into the middle of room. Certainly not a cheap or easy option but it would be the best outcome overall. It will completely change the dynamics of the whole area! I don't think that any furniture layout will be a clear winner as they'll always be a compromise, even though the options as shown above are very very good....See MoreHELP! Comments (25)First ,is removing excess furniture an option? Second, why bar fridge in the dining area, that really ruins the look. Seems that you can not move dining table closer to the kitchen because you have light pendant above the table, so can you move piano where your black couch is and couch on the other side of the room instead of creamy colour sofa . I notice the luck of coffee tables and side tables,that's probably why you like to sit around dining table, it is not visitors friendly and doesn't encourage conversation or interaction. 5 years agoHi Yollie, teal is a wonderful colour. I have found some photos for inspiration. Maybe just paint the wall that tv is on then overlay display cabinets. Or paint the whole room a light colour and bring in teal/gold pieces in furniture and accessories. Or you could go with your original thought, and paint the whole room teal, and see how it looks. It is only paint and time, so can be changed. All the best.

5 years agoThanks Dreamer, great idea. I love the chairs too. Does anyone have thoughts on layout of furniture, what to keep, what not to keep. I have attached a room plan. The front entrance is to the left of the TV. Thanks for your ideas everyone.

5 years agoHi Yollie, two ideas. A two seater lounge, and smaller accent chairs. Then the small chairs can be moved around as required.
If possible, in one idea, I have moved the television to another wall, so this could be a viewing corner, leaving the rest of the room free for accent chairs. You do lose a corner of the room for entry and exit into the other area not shown. So the placement of chairs is a bit restricted.

5 years agoThanks Dreamer, I have added a plan of room with position of doors & windows. Unfortunately the TV has to stay where it is and also there is not really enough room to do anything with the space where the spinning wheel and tapestry is. I’ve added another photo of that end of the room- sorry I didn’t put this one up first. Also we love the painting above the fireplace but the frame could do with an update- ideas for this too would be most appreciated. Thanks again everyone for your comments. Yollie

5 years agoI have attached a new layout, taking into account the new, and important information. I would move your lounge to the wall where spinning wheel is. Move spinning wheel to corner window. Swap tall buffet with lower buffet. Put small chair in corner where television is. Take the two large lounge chairs out completely. They are too bulky for the space. Replace with two high back chairs in your wonderful teal colour. Add a round gold table for chairs. Then these could be used to watch television. But look wonderful when people are entering this space. The lower buffet will be behind these chairs, therefore the teal will stand out against the rich wood tones of buffet. You have unique pieces, people should be able to see them at their best.

5 years agoRegarding the painting above the fireplace, have you thought about getting reframed in a more slimline frame in your teal colour to match the chairs.
