Wisdom of the crowd needed : Exterior and interior color schemes

Hi Everyone,

Really need some advice and thoughts about a color scheme for an Edwardian we are renovating.

I have attached a picture below.

The roof and guttering will be ColourBond Manor Red. This is pretty much set in concrete.

Exterior : We were looking at either some shade of white for the weatherboards, with an ocean blue trim for the windows and features....or inverting the pallet... an ocean blue (or lighter) for the weatherboards with white for the windows and features.

Interior : Some shade of white for the walls and cornices with a brown for the skirts and door frames...OR...white skirts, cornices and frames...with a shade of grey for the walls.

Personally I like all options...but Wife is pulling out her hair.

Thoughts and options???

Hi Brant,

All colour schemes are great but i totally understand the hesitation in choosing. I'm the same with anything for myself!

To choose a 'side' i would like to vote for:

Exterior - the ocean blue for the weather boards and an offwhite for the window trims etc. Its a small front however since you have the white picket fence, and the trees, these will offset all the dark colouring on the house. Make sure the off white is on the creamy side rather than the grey/blue side or it will just be more blue/grey looking against the dark ocean blue. But then that depends on the look you want in the end. :)

Interior - I'm really not a fan of painting brown, if the skirtings are wood and you're just varnishing or oiling them, then ok but not paint. You could use the same off-white for the skirtings and door trims, and a blue-toned grey for the walls. It will be like having a paler version of your outside colour-scheme and very subtly tie them together.

Don't forget buying sample pots and painting on large board to get an idea of how it will look on a larger scale is also a great help. If you paint two colours on one board its better to have them meet rather than leave a gap between them. The slightest suggestion of another colour can change how you view the ones you're trying to decide between.

I really like colorbonds wallaby... they have some contrasting colours listed below... this might give a dark enough look without being too dark. however would you consider changing roof and trims first and then see how you feel about the brickwork? It might be all you need to do for an updated look. I'd maybe do roof and gutters same colour and then down pipes in a colour similar to bricks so not to stand out..., garage doors maybe the woodland grey?

so relieved you don't want to spoil a great looking brick home with more render but is there a view from upstairs? when funds allow extending the deck/verandah across the front of the garage would add extra upstairs outdoor space and modify the look of the garage doors and consider painting garage doors and rendered wall in the darkest cement colour (greenish) grey with white eaves and fascias with black gutters and simply pressure wash the driveway to retain the natural concrete colour and add climbing plants to fall down the side of the retaining wall

I'm looking at the picture , and I'm trying to work everything out . What stage are you at ? Which walls will be red brick ? Are any colourbond , or is that just the roof ? Just in that picture , I can't imagine the red brick suited anywhere there . The left of the garage door , and that splitter wall , would look okay in the brick , but I'm gathering it would be both cheaper and also better suited to do both of those in a fibrocement board , maybe rendered and painted ? The door is just plain boring -- Maybe , just maybe , that wall to the left in the brick would be okay , but it would be difficult to tie it in . Do the flashest door you can afford , but personally I'd like a wider doorway , with glass down 1 side or similar . Likewise , I'd do a matching garage door . The other thing though is around the window -- I'd do that in a shiplap board -- personally I prefer real painted timber rather than anything fake -- there's places you can save costs , but even a whole house is less than 420k different in price -- that bit around the window shouldn't be $1000 different ! Maybe that gets a discussion going . . . . . . .
