I need advice for updating/improving the exterior of this home.
Comments (7)I love this house - it's got so much potential for "wow" with a small budget, depending on the materials you use and if you're prepared to do all/part of the work yourselves. A trip to your local hardware store will help you get costings and work out what you feel able to do yourself and where you're going to employ experts. If the pergola is council approved, I'd keep it, extend a deck (eco wood is easy to use for a beginner handyperson) where the pergola is. I'd add a louvered roof over it so that you have a living space (I'd use specialists for this), and a way of keeping hot summer sun off the front of the house. As it looks like you've got a metal roof, I'd think about painting it, the house trim and the garage doors the same colour to give your home a sense of cohesiveness and keep the exterior walls white as it looks fresh, doesn't date and is in keeping with the style and period of your home. Refreshing the front garden beds will make a huge difference too....See MoreHelp needed with exterior colours

Comments (7)Wow, what a great looking house! You don't need to distract from its pure form and honesty of materials by introducing "decorative" elements that will detract from the clean lines of the architecture. If anything you should be following the original intent and simplifying it. Possibly lining the underside of the verandahs to conceal the exposed and contrasting beams. Your decorative pot is just so wrong with the house - give it to somebody who has a Tuscan style villa. Architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969) adopted the motto "Less is more" to describe his aesthetic. His tactic was one of arranging the necessary components of a building to create an impression of extreme simplicity—he enlisted every element and detail to serve multiple visual and functional purposes. With your house remember "Less is more". If you hate the aesthetic of your house I am sure that there will be a pretty, decorative Hamptons style house for sale in your suburb soon, just don't try to change the style of your home with unessary decoration. Comments (7)Was recently like you with yellow. Have just repainted eighteen year old light white washed look brick house (charcoal roof and black windows) that had all dated classic cream trims - garage, front door, eaves, downpipes, patio ceilings etc which I wanted gone. Go to Bunnings or local paint shop and collect all the little sample swatches that appeal to you. Then in my case I bought Dulux A4 size sheets in colours that I liked. You can then compare the Dulux A4 sheets with other brand colours if you want. When you narrow it down you have the option of buying sample pots. I knew I didn't want white (too light) cream (too yellow) or beige (too boring.) Finally made a choice in between cream and beige and am very happy. Looks fresh and bright, goes perfectly with the bricks and no more yellow. As you are painting the full house remember the colour you choose might need to be a shade darker than what you think....See More- 5 years agolast modified: 5 years ago
