Concept to Completion - Seaside Townhouses

The brief was to create two townhouses that connected to the surrounding landscape, but were protected from its harsh environment. In response to this, the materials palette works on the premise of 'tough on the outside, soft on the inside’; external materials are raw, robust and little maintenance, while the interior is soft on the eye and to the touch.

Exterior materials are robust in response to the sea’s destructive power and mixed in response to the assorted neighbourhood styles. They are mainly untreated, with a long-life cycle and requiring little to no maintenance. Cladding materials include recycled composite boards, Japanese ceramic tiles, and corten steel, with its rusted finish effectively beating the sea to the punch line. This variety of materials, together with contrasting dark uPVC window frames creates a visual delight.

Internally, the connection to the foreshore and longitudinal squeeze of the site meant planning of the dwellings was constrained. Each room has, on its entry axis, a direct line of sight to the landscape beyond. The beach can be seen from the letterbox, interior courtyard from the bedroom entries, the kitchen bench seating looks directly to the sky and so on. The aim was to connect with nature and create a larger sense of space than the site would suggest is possible.
