ideas welcome should we keep it black or change color?

what a fabulous table, so good to seat a crowd together and your table decoration looks very welcoming against the dark table but i expect it would be very difficult and expensive to achieve a different table surface with the same quality finish... suggest keep as is and use different table cloths and place mats for a change of scene...i made several table cloths made out of sheet fabric bought by the metre for our extra long wide table and different colours are used for different occasions

A glass dinning table with dark timber legs in a X cross look in the middle of table will be ideal . You can still see the beautiful floor tiles and the dark timber legs will look amazing over the grey tiles. Have full fabric greyish brown chairs with same leg as the table.

Antique Dining table - how to protect the table top surface

We finished our antique island bench, which was originally the haberdashery counter from David Jones in Newcastle, with a burnishing oil. The surface proudly bears the markers of it's history as the timber was too soft and thin to strip back any further than we have, but the burnishing process has protected it from every day wear and tear including water spills and the rough and tumble that our four boys dish out to every piece of furniture in the house, it also gives it a beautiful shine. We have finished our dining room table the same way. Kitchen dresser and the sides of the island bench that don't get the same use are finished with beeswax.

CP, showed those ones to hubby...wasn't keen, he felt they weren't going to be comfortable for lengthy stints at the dining table. Afjp, think the timber colour won't blend very well with the silky oak of our table. it's hard to get a table cover as its oval shape

I think it would be easy to make one if you have a sewing machine. I think I would leave it as it is too.

is the surface damaged? what is the width and length of the table at its widest and longest? a cabinetmaker might be able to cover the table with a new top made out of Laminex or similar but a table cloth made like a well fitted sheet should work
