Smeg wall ovens reputation
Raq Warren
I'm about to install two Smeg wall ovens and a gas top cooker in my renovation. Reading many negative reviews of Smeg. Is it worth the money? Or should I consider Fisher Paykel perhaps.

I’ve heard of the glass exploding in smeg ovens. We’ve been very happy with Miele ovens but going with Electrolux in next build.

I don’t have Smeg as it was more expensive than my budget. I am very happy with my Bosch.

New kitchen design dilemma

The choice of oven will affect the layout of your kitchen. You want an efficient layout, which is what I'd describe as the working triangle (fridge, sink and oven/cooktop). The advantage of 2 wall ovens is that you can be cooking 2 things simultaneously (like a roast and desert at the same time - 2 completely different dishes) which makes your time in the kitchen more efficient. There is a trend towards multiple wall ovens for kitchens, so this will add value to the property as kitchens are a major selling point. If you go ahead with an underbench oven I'd recommend it to be 900mm wide and with a matching cooktop and rangehood, because it a family home and anything smaller will not cater to your family or add value to your home. The picture below is an example of a kitchen with multiple wall ovens. For this particular project, there is a butlers pantry where you'll find all the electrical kitchen appliance including the microwave. I would also say butlers pantry's are very desirable at the moment and even necessary like an ensuite. From the floor plan you've provided it looks like your pantry is open, you could consider installing a sliding door to achieve a butlers pantry. The other option for your microwave is to include an open shelf in your island bench. Just make sure you have a power point installed which shouldn't be an issue since you have the dishwasher located there also. Good luck with your project. Looks like you have most of the major design questions resolved.

Ovens!!!

After selling ovens for 10 years, I received a lot of hands on training and feedback from customers. Which is why I would strongly advise against Westinghouse ovens. F&P is a step up, but Bosch is a jump up! I personally would buy Miele, for ease of use, ease of cleaning, cooking performance, aesthetics and the best quality. However, if the budget won't allow for Miele, Bosch is the go. You can't argue with German quality. For extra cooking capacity, consider a 70cm wide oven or a double wall oven or 2 x 60cm ovens. Just make sure you are sure you really do need it before spending the extra money. By using the functions properly and cooking on multiple shelves at the same time, you can easily cook for a crowd in a 60cm oven. With a decent oven you can even cook various dishes with various flavours, at the same time. I have done it on many many occasions.

double oven vs single oven?

Thank you all for your timely responses. I too have always enjoyed the convenience of my two ovens which can be used independently of each other, which is why I am seriously considering the 1.5 double oven option. I have also researched the idea of two compact ovens which include microwave and steam options, (Bosch, Miele, Smeg AEG etc) and was all excited about that idea, but to install two of these is far too expensive. ($5000+ minimum) The freestanding convection microwave options all stipulate minimum 10-20cm airflow at the top of the unit, and the ones that do come with trim kits still all end up being too large for the space...frustratingly, often by only 2 or 3 cm! And yes, I've also lusted after an induction cooktop, but the expense of chasing wiring down a solid brick wall and disrupting backsplash tiling has put the kybosh on that idea. Anyhow, I have slept on this (again!) and have come to the conclusion that a 1.5 oven without an integrated microwave is the only way available at a reasonable cost.... A small microwave inside a cupboard might just work.... It's both interesting and noteworthy that convection/microwave +/- steam, with regular multifunction oven combinations although expensive, are readily available in several brands in the US......I'm jealous!

Ovens - Miele, Bosch or Siemens

I would highly recommend AVOIDING a siemens oven. We bought a normal oven, along with a combo steam oven, about 6 years ago. The whole time we kept getting faults on our steam oven and after every fix the error would come back, or a different error code would pop up. After 3 years the top heating element fell loose because the screws holding it in place completely rusted and left a hole into the oven cavity. The oven had to be replaced, which was a nightmare to organise, but we eventually got them to agree/organise. Another 3 years down the track and we have had the same issue with the rusted cavity top! I have since found other reviews stating the same issue. We had issues with our siemens gas cooktop also, however in fairness, after a service technician fixed those it has performed well enough. You would expect, paying so much, that an oven would last more than 3 years. We designed our new kitchen around these appliances, and our other oven will now not match a new steam oven. They have offered us a refund of our originally paid price, which is far less than what the oven costs now. I'm extremely disappointed, we will be left substantially out of pocket and with an oven that does not suit our kitchen. Aside from that, their ovens don't even cook well - things don't seem to crisp up as well as they used to in my much cheaper previous oven. Don't be fooled by the sleek design like we were.
