Congratulations on your move! Cost for buying custom cabinets is like buying a car... they can all get you from point A to point B, but can vastly range in price. You will need to provide more information to be able to provide a cost estimate. But to give you some tips... Design choices that effect the price are: SIZE: Obviously, the size of the unit effects the price. 2) FINISHES: Two pack is dearest, single pack next, timber veneer next and laminate the cheapest. On an entertainment unit single pack is acceptable unless you want high gloss, which is only achievable in two pack. Finish will change the price by approx 15%. 3) FUNCTION: Drawers are the most expensive component of a unit. Whilst a bank of 3 drawers may cost $600, a door covering the same space can be $150. So if you decide to have 2 banks of drawers instead of 2 doors, the price difference can be around $900. 4) STYLE: Clean contemporary style costs less than period style because of less detail in the manufacture. So when getting a unit designed, have a photo of the wall, a floor plan of the space with dimensions and ceiling height, size of television, amount of equipment required to be stored or any other functional requirements, and style of the apartment. This will provide enough information to get something designed. Better still, get a designer / maker out to give you an onsite consultation and they can draw all this information together for you and provide a concept and price. I love the open shelving picture above :) Is the borrowed light, next to the front entry? If so, How about blocking in the current doorway and changing the 'borrowed light' section into a larger, say 820mm or bigger glazed Cavity sliding doorway (or, possibly two smaller sliders leaving a wider opening for when using as a study. Then place your robes /shelving along wall opposite new doorway. This would leave the room ample big enough for a bed up against the wall w bedhead adjoining the bathroom with room for a small dresser/study desk also. Pop a piece of Artwork on the wall to look like a view..and presto you have a window view added to the room!! From a resale or visiting guest perspective a definate YES to go with your friend/valuers advice??

Ignore your friends and rip out your cupboards, and start again. They look low, old and inefficient as there is a large wasted void space above them. Consider a custom-made joinery unit that incorporates a recess for your TV, that is built up to the ceiling, and provides a variety of storage and display spaces, above, below and adjacent to the TV recess to provide more storage than you currently have. As you guessed , I just express my opinion . Some agree , some don't . Some houses which I have sold 20 years ago are still in the same decor , other people may not have purchased . I prefer a planned colour pallette and something that has a Wow , and I definitely won't have the same colour walls and ceilings all through a property . Some fast food restaurants do have the same colour all the way through , but even they tend to have white ceilings or similar . I do have a ( small ) stainless deep fryer that does great chips though ! As far as texture goes , I 100% guarantee I would have more texture than this house , to use the obvious comparison . That is why , if you go back up to my original post , I suggested a feature wall of wallpaper , and a painting -- texture and colour . I don't like grey or beige as primary colours , and in fact don't consider them pastels either , but thats pointless arguing semantics . I wouldn't have that combo , the OP would -- good on her . If houzz only had people that agree , it may be very boring .
