Help choosing the right artwork & artwork size for master bedroom

I'm after some advice with choosing the right artwork and size of the artwork to go above our masterbed (picture 1 & 2).

The bedhead length is 193cm and the height from the top of the bedhead to the bottom of the architrave is 144cm.

The bedlinen we have is vintage washed denim (picture 1 & 2) and the blue green quilted one (picture 3). See below links as well.

Hi Sandy,

As a general rule of thumb, to ensure your artwork is scaled appropriately and in proportion, it should be approximately 70-80% the width of the width of your bed/furniture and be sited 6-12 inches above the top of your bed/furniture. Sandy - given the width of your bed, I worry the size artwork you have chosen may look out of proportion when hung i.e. too small against your bed. My vote would be for the 140x100. If your bed is 193 wide, 75% of that width is approximately 144 so that size artwork has the potential to look the best :) The 140x100 size still allows 26.5cm of negative space on either side of your artwork to the sides of your bed with the ability to position your artwork well given the height you are working with. I'd go with his choice, because even if it wasn't 'my' style, I'd rather feel like he's taking an interest and equally invested in our home together. Plus, if I'm being completely honest, I think his taste is probably better than mine. ;) He rarely has an opinion on anything house-related, so when he puts his foot down, I go along with it: and on each occasion, it's been exactly the right decision. Example: I wanted the whole house painted out in ecru and antique white because it looks awesome with oak floors and I'm kind of a minimalist. Hubby insisted on painting the lounge room in yellow. YELLOW. I thought he'd lost his mind... but I went with it, because I get my way 99.9% of the time, so why quibble about the 0.1%? He insisted that 'in Winter, you'll be glad we have this warm, cozy colour'. And you know what? Every Winter, I love that room. It's an odd duck compared to the rest of the house, but damned if it doesn't actually work surprisingly well. It'd definitely be too much to take as a house-wide theme - but contained as it is, it's pretty great.

Hi, Love the artwork. Because they're so small, how about putting them vertically, side by side on the wall where the bookcase is. I'd either take out the bookcase, or paint it white. If space is an issue in the room, you could maybe replace the bookcase with a small ottoman/ pouf in a textured plain fabric. This gives guests a place to lay their clothes at night or to set an overnight bag. You could consider a LARGE, maybe hectagonal grey framed mirror over the bed to echo the lines in the bedding. The bedding has a lot of pattern and a mirror may be all you need. Most of all, don't rush. Take your time and enjoy the process.

Hi Kerry_g, they are two great spaces to fill :) You have a great combination of colour already in your rooms, so the question is do you want something dynamic that stands out or more subtle as to not overpower the room? Something like the Inks on Paper works that I create may be of interest to you as they can have both effects on a room, depending on how they are styled. If you like an artist's works and are concerned on whether the art you choose will look suitable in reality, speak with the artist about their returns policy. Most quality artists will have a reasonable returns policy in place, as this gives their customers peace of mind. Bluethumb (disclosure here - I have some of my art there) also has a 7 day free returns policy, and they have a great range of styles and sizes. Hi Linda, you've chosen the right colours to create a lovely restful space for your bedroom: the blue/green spectrum is the most calming. > If the wall that you would look it when propped up in bed is available, that's the wall to place your new artwork on - where you can easily admire it. > Artwork is a very personal choice but, to maintain a gender neutral (!) and meditative theme, you might like to take a look at our aura collection. I felt the 120x90 was also just a little too small length wise but nervous the 140x100 will be too big.

As the artwork is definitely going to be a statement in the room, do you think the painting above picture 4 or the picture below Picture 5 & 6 would suit better?

Hi Sandy, I think the 140 is the perfect proportion for your bed... whereas I worry your first choice will look undersized for the space. Have a look through Houzz master bedrooms with artwork so you feel more confident when selecting your size. I just love art... but it truly is such a personal choice. I actually prefer the last one ... both in colour & movement but it’s what your eye is drawn to & what your heart loves :)
