Design tips for my living area

I’d really appreciate some design tips for my living area. It’s approximately 6m x 4.5m with low ceilings (~2.4m). It’s partly a thoroughfare from the entry to the kitchen/dining area and rest of the house. We have a 3 seater and 2 seater leather lounge and just can’t seem to find an arrangement that looks good and suits our living. We’d prefer not to have to purchase a new lounge, however maybe a 3 seater with a chaise or ottoman with a lower back and an arm chair or 2 would be better... We’d like to put a piano on the north end wall between the kitchen and lounge and also get a buffet for our record player. It’s a blank canvas really. Any tips/ideas would be appreciated.

If you swing the 2-seater to the other side of the rug and place the armchair to the left of the window, it would make the scene more inviting and intimate in winter. The walls are desperate for paintings/prints and lower the existing painting or place another one underneath. Great rug. Maybe a bookcase each side of the TV table would add to the feeling and, as always, sheer curtains in an interesting design from ceiling to floor will mean you can see out during the day without outsiders seeing in. Just remember it is the reverse at night with the light on.

The hold-back is a bit naf, but the fabric is suitable.

Not exactly a bookcase, but hope you get the gist.

Thanks for the tips. I love the idea of the 2seater over to the other side of the room. I did have it that way but the back seems too high relative to the low ceilings. Maybe it would look better if some painting/prints were on the wall. W’ve been looking at paintings/prints but just haven’t been able to agree on anything lol. The tv unit/book shelf the length of the room looks amazing. Definitely looking into that. I’ve got some work to! Thank you so much.

@oskuee - Wow - that's a bit hostile! Why are you so upset? Other professionals constantly add their comments and suggestions to Design Dilemmas, so why can't I? There are MANY names which appear constantly in nearly every Design Dilemma. I see you have made 1150 comments yourself! This Houzzer has asked for artwork ideas and that is precisely what I am providing. I am giving them advice as to what may/may not work in their space. I'm a hard working Australian Artist trying to make a living, like everybody else and I'm a little frustrated with people sending others to places selling mass produced art, when Australia is rich with creative talent. Shouldn't we be supporting the work of Australian Artists? Original artworks need not be expensive and I don't believe everybody needs to go to the majors for a cheap artwork. I would place the sofa in front of the fireplace and armchairs either side. Pur a colourful throw over the back of the sofa or add a console at the back of the sofa to add interest. While the sofa loses some of the open plan look, you need to be functional unless you have a TV room. The bookcase will add a real warmth. If you use swivel armchairs, you can swivel to watch TV or swivel to face the sofa when just talking. We have these and they are very functional.

Ok, I see ...one possibility would be to retain the unit as shelving where it is and wall mount the tv on the adjacent wall so that you can optimise seating arrangement. Otherwise I think you are on the right track, a circular rug would work, maybe a couple of mid century chairs might look nice, you could put some trailing plants up high away from your little one, maybe a basket or two to keep toddler clutter in check would go with an eclectic kind of look. If you move to a larger space in the future, mid century chairs would be easy to pair with a couch.. I think try and bring as much storage as you can to keep the space manageable.

Hi yecats_h.
1. As Weaver_Interiors has suggested, getting sheer curtains will immediately give the room a more cosy feel.
2. I'd suggest moving the two-seater away from the window and putting two armchairs there instead with a table between them. I'd move the 3-seater 45 degrees to the left and getting rid of the 2-seater but that obviously depends on the functionality and use of the room. An armchair with a colour from the rug would also be good to break the monotony of the leather seats and entertainment unit.
3. I'd put some paintings/prints on the wall that the armchair is currently against as that would attract people when they walk in. I'm guessing this is also the wall the that the piano will go against? If yes, obviously consider the look and colour of the piano.
4. Lastly, I'd also suggest adding a few decorative items on the entry - so maybe a rectangular marble table with a vase or a decorative piece and maybe a mirror on the wall. This immediately makes the space welcoming and pretty. :)
I think you can make the room work without getting new sofas. Just a matter of adding little pieces and elements to open up the room and make it more cosy. I'm happy to create some concepts for you - at no cost - if that would help you to visualise it better.

Hi , I agree moving your 2 seater to other side of rug. Use your chair and a small side table in front of window, you could incorporate your tv and unit in creating a modular tv wall, add artwork, fab cushions and I think day night roller blinds would add modern look to your lovely room.

And add a fab coffee table, side table, gorgeous lamp and some beautiful planters, could look gorgeous.

Thanks for your feedback Emily, I had considered ditching the 2-seater. Love the idea of the 2 armchairs by the window. If I moved the 3 seater 45 degrees that would also open up the entry while still creating a cosy inviting space in the living area. Also very interested in your ideas for the entry way. We did have some hideous 80s/90s cabinets and glass shelves in the nook opposite the entry. It was actually pretty handy but too cringeworthy. That would be fabulous if you could create some concepts.
