The alternative is paint. Without correct and proper priming products and aplication, this is risky, doors and end panels are quite easy, hoer adjoining wet areas or heated panels, unless you use the right product things can go wrong. I would think of using a vinyl (thermolaminated) profiled door, something simple. Like a square shaker style door, both modern and classic but not old fashioned. It will create focus in the kitchen and again front he simplicity of the Benchtops, The splash back could be anything, but subway are great I agree, there is also a DIY acrylic sheet from laminex called metaline which can be installed right over tile, you can even co yourself or have the cabinet maker do it. It has the appearance of a glass splash back with great colour choices. There is a pewter or grey metallic like argente perle, which would tie in your stainless appliances making it overall modern and clean. Good luck?

I would get an 'L' shaped lounge that can run dow the right hand wall and across where the other lounge is now - or simply get another lounge that matches. Move the TV to the other side and hang it on the wall, as everyone has suggested. Don't worry about not seeing it from the kitchen - it can go on a swivel stand so you can move it at will. You may need curtains as that area seems to be a little lighter than the other side of the room. With an L shaped lounge or 2 x 2 seaters, you'll have tons of room for the kids. You can put some storage where the TV was, and the storage that is under the TV now can move across to be under the TV again.

with the holes from the original handles you may be lucky enough to find a simple D handle that can be installed in the same position...available in chrome, brushed chrome, white, brass and similar to yours in wood but also available in square and curved shapes...check out all the major hardware stores and also available on line...should start at around $4 each
