Red Brick Exterior - SOS...Exterior Colours HELP!!
Renovating a very large house with Red Brick exterior in a with terracotta-ish painted render on part of exterior - see pic - which looks ultra dated to me. Have decided not to paint the brick,
but to make it work better. Need help selecting a colour scheme for the garage doors, the rendered terracotta section and the driveway. Utterly terrified of getting it wrong on such large areas. Have been considering a mid to dark eucalypt green for render and garage doors and a dark terracotta for the drive. Has anyone done a project like this? Grateful for all ideas, pics and suggestions! .. ! :)

5 years agoAgree with me me, your wall is dominant, lush planting along your wall would soften the look beautifully, a very dark charcoal ,black or even navy would go well with terracotta,

Comments (2)To Modernise this without rendering or retiling the roof I would probably recommend to go darker with the trims. My top pick as a colour consultant would be Dulux's Domino for the trim. It will be a little bolder and create a more modern contemporary feel. You can see it pictured below as the trim. Obviously this house has painted their bricks in the shade "teahouse" however it will still look much better on your 1980s "peru" colour bricks! Comments (9)Hi Russ, what a great house. I’d leave the windows white as was typical of the era. It gives these triple fronted houses a lightness that would be lost if you painted them in something dark like monument. It would also look like you are trying to turn the house into something that it’s not. Far better to embrace and honour the original design intent than trying to make it look contemporary as it will end up looking confusing. I’d paint the eaves and the garage door though. Comments (9)The green I think we all agree , has to go , and yes a charcoal or midgrey would lift it . I wonder about the driveway -- it does overwhelm in the picture , BUT a wider angle picture showing the whole front of section and the neighbours , may paint a different picture . I actually think the 'problem' is that the garage looks dis-jointed . I'd do the front 'veranda' panel in the same as the gutters , BUT I'd leave the finial , roof edge and those 3 boards where they are , and try and match them ( colourwise ) with the red of the roof tiles ; and likewise try and match and paint the garage doors with the same colour as the bricks ( I know you've said red -- the roof looks red to me , but the bricks look more orangey beige to me -- but that's the colour I'd try and match ) . Hi Julie - no I dont want to render the brick or paint if possible!!...the brick is in excellent conditon especially as Ive now pressure washed it .. All I really wanted to do initially was paint driveway and perhaps the small coloured rendered section you can see behind the deck. ..Yes thought about Dulux colour consultants..I will look into that for sure....
However as to the idea of paint or render...
...here's a result - albeit rough - i did on pixlr - a very dark inky blue black looks good . I can see paint or render could look amazing. The cost and job itself would be huge - but it would be an immediate upgrade to the look of the house.
PRO5 years agoJust make sure the dark inky blue has a bit of 'mud' in it - thereby not making the blue too 'clean' - have a little practice with a paint pot on a spot in the sun. If you treated the section around the garage doors with a bit of eneven sandstone, it would stop the shape from being so naff

5 years agoHey Mischa, agree the retaining wall fence needs some attention and plants will make a difference as me me and Julie Herbert suggested. But perhaps, instead of painting, you could attach some decorative panelling (wave boards, laser cut panels, timber) to it. You could add lighting behind it to make it a feature. As for colour, agree with Julie (again), about navy particularly
