Gingerbread house facelift - exterior colour
Comments (13)Belinda, with you on cream or beige, it's everywhere. To make your white windows, roof and verandah (and those cute awnings on upper windows, they really help balance the proportions and give your facade some punch) how about a deep, dark grey (deeper than your splashback) - or even charcoal or black stain? Timeless, crisp and classic. There are now light reflecting paints that mean you can go deep and dark and it won't warp the boards. Cover (or at least paint out) the ugly old meters so they disappear. Then pick out some mid greys (a palette of two or three for interest) to paint the veranda posts, deck and steps. Since you don't have a paintable front door, you can add your pops of colour with plant pots, potted flowers or a couple of beaut old chairs (rockers?) to sit on that lovely front porch....See MoreExterior- Street Appeal, help transform our ugly duckling
Comments (41)I agree with several other commentators. I love the look of your house, arches & all. Retro is in! I would pretty much leave as is & concentrate on cleaning concrete & landscaping. You will be amazed at what a difference good landscaping will make to the street appeal. With the right colors in your planting you might even come to like the look of your home like most of us already do. In a busy world the last thing you want is more upkeep & I think you would be making a rod for you own back if you render or paint the brick. And keeping it true to the era could add to its resale value. The only things I would change is the color of the garage doors & facia to either Dulux Natural White or Antique White USA whichever you prefer & the gates black if you want to be safe or a bolder contrasting color. As for the window frames I keep tossing up between the black & the white. Maybe black window frames with black gates would look good. Good luck with it all & look forward to seeing the finished result. Cheers Jenny...See MoreNew look for this Ugly Duckling?
Comments (9)Look at picture 1 . What in that photo looks attractive ? Yep -- the neighbours garage , in grey with white trim highlights . Look at picture 2 . What looks dated and looks like someone in their 90's lives there ? Yep -- the neighbours house in beigey yellow with grey trim . Look at both pictures . Which looks best ? Pic 1 . With the white garage door , and evenly spaced terracota pots . So -- what I'd do . yep -- paint the whole house in a light grey , with white trim . I assume the garage door is now in white ? If not , strip off the brown , and do it white . Paint the front door bright red , or bright sunshine yellow , and paint the 2 terracota pots the same , and position them evenly , as per pic 1 . Add a white stone garden maybe 1.5 metres wide , across the front lawn , with several big plants -- a reddish coloured one , a brown spikey one , a couple of leafy green ones , a tall cactus and a low one . And waterblast or chemically clean the drive ....See MoreUgly Duckling Debra - Exterior Facelift
Comments (12)Assuming that your photos are the ones with the cars. The other photo looks like a kept lawn. I would suggest: Window shutters to match other internal windows, for the window that the car is parked in front of. Landscaping with garden bed and large pots either side of the front door. As said by CP, black trims and windows would look good against your bricks. If you render bricks, there is no turning back. You could Add a simple portico that matches the angle of roof line. Photos of examples attached....See Moreengland01
