Hi. We were just discussing same option on the weekend. Our solution was......make up a timber frame to cover door ( like a false free standing wall) insulate with batts to reduce heat/ cold/ noise if required and then just gyprock over. You could actually do two false walls so if at a later date you wish to remove just half for whatever reason, it would be easier. These walls could even be on sold at a later date as there is def a demand for similar fit out. For the single door, you could always put cupboards under and then build them in by creating a false bulkhead to hide the roll or move one of the cupboards and construct a built in media cabinet with bulkhead once again to hide the roll. I suggest having the internal walls rendered and plastered, or gyprock over them (then paint a "white" that seems to work), and update the flooring as a starting point, along with changing the light fittings. I recently renovated our 70s home and regret painting all of the timber without living with it first. It looked horrible with the old walls and floors, but I think could have worked nicely with our new colours and given a nice hint of 70s to our place. I don't mind the verticle balustrade either. It could possibly work as a feature when the other elements are more neutral, possibly even painted black against the light walls behind. Outside, just replacing the palms ad painting the fence and balcony infills could make a huge difference whilst you ponder how to best work with wht you have (& not just try to pretend it is a brand new home, I am all for embracing the quirks).

Hi Lindsey, I also agree with the comments regarding adding indoor plants to fill the gaps on either side of the TV. Some great, low-maintenance indoor plants are the Fiddle Leaf Fig, Monstera (also known as Swiss Cheese Plant) and Snake Plant (Mother-In-Law's Tongue). They're all beautiful plants and very ease to take care of. Another option would be to have some open shelving on either side, similar to the one we have used in this Living Room styling below. This could work really well, especially if you have limited storage for some bits and pieces you would like on display. A bonus is that including taller items like this will create a sense of balance in the room, and accentuate the height of your wall which will create an illusion of taller ceilings.
