How do we give our entrance wow factor?
Comments (137)I see this is a very old thread , with lots of comments . I've just skim read them , but I haven't seen anyone suggest anything like my 'top-of-my-head' idea -- I love the wood , and the white contrast , but pretty boring . Whats your favourite colour , or what ties in with the other rooms ? It might be blue or red or yellow or orange or green , as examples . So paint the skirting board and around the door a pastel shade of your choice , and add a small 30cm x 30cm abstract painting featuring that colour as the primary dominant one , above ( or possibly below , or maybe even get 2 matching/complementary ones ) the control panel . One lighting crowd suggested glass shades -- I'd actually go for someothing large but wooden , in much the same shade as your floors and steps , with LED bulbs -- you can get some stunning ones around 80-100 cm in diameter ( sort of a star ball shape ) for $300-400 . Total budget then $500 plus a painter and maybe electrician , unless you DIY ....See MoreDado rails - keep or lose it?
Comments (20)Your home is lovely, my thoughts are if you are hesitating about the dado rails, maybe consider turning them into an elegant and timeless feature, by converting them to wainscoting? (I sense from your question that you are not a devotee of the Victorian style :-) I also agree with what the others have mentioned about changing the colours to something more neatural like a shade of grey that you like or a dusty blue, and leaving the lower half white. For a more updated look, you could look at updating the pendant lights to something a little more classic, (to your taste of course) and if budget permits, changing to carpets to perhaps a hardwood floor. All the best, I hope this helped. Ive attached a picture and link to an example. http://www.charmingzebra.com/2011/07/wainscoting-success-sort-of.html...See MoreModernising a 90yr old California Bungalow WITHOUT losing its charm
Comments (3)Add some skylights in hall to add light. Don’t like the look there are new solar lights that are very discrete that are an alternative. Keep ceilings white to add brightness and avoid dull colours, which sadly are traditional for this age house. Need a floor plan...See MoreWhat should we do with this floor plan?
Comments (13)3d Laser scanning is a developing technology increasingly being utilised ( by land surveyors ) to accurately establish existing conditions and features. The scanning creates and collates a series of 3 dimensional "data points" to form a 3D "point cloud" from which various layers of detail can be extrapolated into CAD/drawings etc, so you essentially achieve a 3D model of an existing house that you can cut through for plans, sections etc and spring design processes from with ninja precision. We've started to implement it for certain projects to ensure accurate measure up data collection for our renovation/extension projects. As we all know, structures are rarely built perfectly square, and whilst there is merit in still taking physical off the tape measurements for detail, translating site measurements onto CAD assuming everything's at right angles can be tricky to resolve easily and accurately on paper....See MoreLu D
