Butler Pantry or Not???
Comments (21)We will be building in about 12 months and a butler's pantry is an absolute must. Bear in mind though that we have bought 100 acres and my aim is self sufficiency. We will have our own beef, pork, chicken, duck and of course eggs and veges. Butler's pantry for me will be a food prep area for preservation and storage and to have probably at least 2 large freezers. Now I could arguably just use the kitchen but I want a door way to articulate outside to the garden and I still want a space (kitchen) to do normal cooking and living. I know this is a little different from a suburban situation buI I have to mention that my very suburban sister has a small butler's pantry and I love it. The toaster and the coffee machine are out of sight but hugely accessible. She can have that messy and nobody knows out cares! At the end of the day I obviously love a good pantry but there are also some innovative cupboard ideas that certainly seem worth looking at!...See MoreCombined Butlers pantry and laundry?
Comments (13)Thank you very much for everyone's comments! They are all really appreciated! At this stage I am viewing the PANTRY/LAUNDRY as a "space". I am leaning towards using the STORAGE in the kitchen for pantry items and the "space" for the Laundry and mainly appliances/excess storage/baking equipment, tupperwares etc ie not everyday use items. Based on the feedback we will be putting in a strip drain in that area and 2 x exhaust fans. The laundry will also have pull out bins for dirty washing to ensure nothing is lying on the ground! @oklouise - thanks for that revised plan. I do like the idea of a walk-in-pantry and will be definitely considering this option @siriuskey - that's what I was thinking how I would use this space ST is for storage. Kids school bags etc....See MoreButlers pantry with study
Comments (15)I think it will be a mistake to use the WIR as a pantry, it's too big , distance between cabinets is too far and do you really want to stand in a cupboard .. Seeing that you work from home the WIR would be far better used for your home office. You mentioned have already started work and changed things which is a shame as you could have had a better result, ie: access to a narrow WIP should have been at the sink end which would have allowed for a possible narrow office, both running parallel to each other, with both having light from the external window...See MoreHelp, do I need a sink in my butler's pantry?
Comments (45)Note - This is what I think of the concept in general. It's not a criticism again the OP - I think Butler's pantries are better idea's in concept than practice. I've not understood the rationale for a kitchen thats separate to your kitchen, unless of course you are prepping all your meals in there in which case what is the kitchen for? I think it's a sign of the times that we have more space and more money than we know what to do with when we start installing two kitchens in the same space. Of course I understand the rationale for a pantry. A place to store food items that may not be used frequently and the same for appliances. In the days when food was only available in season and the only way to preserve certain foods was to pickle and bottle it then a large space to store those supplies was necessary. We live in the modern age now where any food can be gotten easily and cheaply all year round. So these spaces are housing mostly appliances that we rarely use. And if we rarely use them you have to ask yourself why you are holding onto them?...See Moreoklouise
