Comments (8)Hi Colleen. If you don't like Shaker style, I'd focus on contemporary but understated, as opposed to modern cabinets. Think matt or satin finish, rather than gloss for cabinets. You don't necessarily need handles, but if you do keep them architectural and simple. For example, a D shape handle in stainless steel as opposed to anything fancy. Finally, I'd avoid doing a glass splash back in this architectural situation. This is where you can inject personality. I know subway tiles have been overdone, but you can still include slightly different patterns, such as herringbone or running them vertically rather than horizontally. Or if you prefer a bit of colour, go for something like a 100x100 hand-made tile in a colour you like (or something that looks hand-made). While these tiles are more expensive, you've got a relatively small amount to purchase, and this can make all the difference. Comments (2)Camberwell is a prestigious area, but your budget looks very tight for the amount of work you are proposing. You don't want to put a cheap looking job on a nice Californian bungalow in a good area, like the previous owners did. Does your "$240K all inclusive" figure include items like demolition, landscaping, light fittings, window furnishings, floor finishes? I think that you may have trouble getting reputable, good quality builders, quoting within your price range in your suburb, but it is hard to say without seeing your plans. Comments (8)It is hard to tell from the photo but I suspect it may be a traditional cement render with layers of paint over the top. It looks like you can see the original trowel finishes in the render. This recess was possibly used for a gas or electric fireplace as the paint and render would have been damaged by a timber or coal fire. However there is only one way to find out which is to carefully remove some of the paint. Be aware that it may be a harzardous lead-based paint under the top layer of paint which looks like it could be 1980's. If you want to keep your home fairly authentic I would consider using plainer tiles rather than the heavily patterned tiles which have more of a late 1960's/1970's vibe. Comments (5)I would not go with any of your options. I would continue bench and overhead cupboards with appliances and sink in a U shape taking up the whole wall space. Then purchase a skinny appropriate proportioned dining table. This could also utilised as a preparation surface as well....See MoreJudy Randeniwela

4 years agoIt looks like a fairly generic project builders home and was probably not designed by an architect. Some builders, such as AV Jennings, established whole subdivsions, which became suburbs and many of their standard "products" were repeated with variations in brickwork, colours and left or right hand driveway.
If you would like to find out more about your home then council may have the original plans in their archives and will charge a fee of around $100 to provide copies which will provide the details of the builder (and architect if one was involved). From your photo and description I suspect it may be a Lucas Morris home which was one of the quality builders operating in the Eastern suburbs during the 1980's and 1990's before they were swallowed up by Englehardt Homes who are still in business.
