Plantation shutters: Polymer vs timber
Comments (13)Have any of to guys looked at the toxic properies of poly shutters . They have to use something as a bonding agent and most times it is formaldahide ! Timber is organic and most companies that bring them in have to make sure that the companies that manufacture have the forestry stewardship cerificate which means that the timber used is renewable . Timber is far lighter and can span wider . Remember one thing , houses are made from timber and rubbish bins are made from poly . To the doubters and not sure shutter buyers make sure that you choose a timber product that is 100% that species of timber , not blended timbers and to the ones that are contemplating using poly shutters beware as i truly beleive that they will be the next asbestos scare . They are not good for your health . Always try and go organic guys , even with your food ....See MoreTo plantation shutter or to not plantation shutter...
Comments (8)Plantation shutters are visually busy and reduce your water view by 50% even when fully open. It looks like you have the old style aluminium frame windows and single glazing. I don't know if losing heat in the winter, or getting too hot in the summer is a problem in your part of the world, but aluminium framed windows are excellent at transferring the external temperature inside as they conduct heat. If this is a problem then you can't beat traditional lined, full length curtains and a pelmet. Ensure the track is much wider than the window so that you can pull the curtains fully back, clear of the window, to enjoy the views. Traditional curtains give you the most flexibility for light control, heat control and privacy when required. I would look for a plain block of colour (not patterned fabric), with very simple understated pelmets for an elegant and flexible solution that will work for all of your seasons. Comments (12)Assuming all your windows are similar in height to the one in the picture ( taller than they are wide ) I'd personally do just 2 panels . If you really wanted , you could even ask for a solid 'narrow beam' down the middle so they look almost like 4 sections . If you hinge them twice , and have 4 sections across each window , it will be quite fiddly , and maybe this makes me lazy , but why purposely make something that needs 3 or 4 fastenings at the top , another 3 or 4 at the base , and special holders to hold them firm when they are opened . Wide plantation blinds , with a catch each side , is all it needs ....See Moreplantation shutter with roller blind
Comments (11)The trouble is they are bifold shutter doors, I think, you haven’t said whether they are or not. Therefore roller blinds will have to be secured into the wall above the frame of shutters, giving enough room for the blind mechanism to work correctly, and enough room for the shutters doors to be “bi folded”. If you hardly use that door and will only put the blinds down at night time with the bifold closed, then yes, install them. You could encase the roller blinds mechanism in a pelmet to hide. But again that pelmet needs to finished above the doors. Therefore Roman blinds would not work, because they do not retract completely. Unless you had them secured very high on the wall....See MoreAnne Monsour
