Thanks everyone! We will live it with now. @ cloudpants and suzineedsahouse - The ideas about putting something on the bench to distract the eye is a good idea. Maybe a nice plant? @ Elements at Home - That's an awesome idea. One big door on heavy duty hinges. We'll use the drawers mostly, so we won't be opening and closing them often. I'll definitely investigate that option further. @ dohraine - Only one drawing out of the 60 or so drawings showed the position of the taps in correlation to the doors. But, on paper the difference really wasn't that noticeable. The bench is Caesarstone. The pictures are a week or two old so the filing is all complete now (or it should be, I haven't seen photos of the interior in a while). I'm not sure just replacing the Caesarstone and sinks is a viable option.

Hi Narella, most manufacturers of induction cooktops such as say Miele and Smeg make their 600mm wide units around 500mm to 505mm deep (front to back) where these fit comfortably into a 600mm deep cabinet, while still allowing for all the clearances, overhangs and venting required. You may like to check with your cabinet maker but as far as I am aware NEFF make their induction cooktops much deeper; making these 546mm deep instead of 500mm. This means that your cabinets also need to be deeper than the "normal" once all the required clearances are taken into account. I am not sure what you mean when you say this will not work with the rest of your cabinets. If you are positioning your NEFF cooktop above your underbench oven as it is shown in your original photo; then it appears that your cabinet maker has again done the right thing and has actually made all your adjacent cabinets the same depth; whereby preserving these clean modernist lines of your kitchen. You could consider custom joinery that actually looks freestanding - purposefully creating a gap from the edge of the fireplace surround to the wardrobe & on the wall side also. This would also mean that it really does not matter if the front of the cupboards do not align with the front of the fireplace. Adding a nicely detailed leg, and a feature handle (you can get some really unique Australian made ones these days) to give some visual interest to the otherwise minimal finishes. Keep it simple & classic so it ages with your child's taste and preferences. As an example, The Design Files recent article has an image of a cupboard in a lounge area, that could be adapted to two double door units on either side of the fireplace https://thedesignfiles.net/2019/10/interiors-house-p-cjh-studio/. Seems perfect for a child of any age, or even if you want to convert the room to a more 'grown up purpose' once they leave home ;-)

If you paint all entry doors same colour as walls they tend to ‘disappear’ and won’t compete with the robe doors. Re the drawer set up fold some of your own & partner’s clothes the way you want them to fit in your new cabinetry and measure from there. A 9cm height could be a great underwear drawer, or if you have power to the back if it a charging station for phones & laptops. Make a careful inventory of everything that needs to fit and decide from there.
