Bathroom remodel choices - where to start?

Should I start by deciding if I want a white vanity, or one with a light grain wood, and then choose a counter top color? Or, should I decide on floor and shower tile first and then focus on the vanity? The bathroom is approx. 5 feet across and 10 ft. long. There is a 48 inch long vanity as you walk inside, then the toilet. The shower, with a window, is along the back wall.

This is a bathroom from 1958 and there are so many choices out there today, I feel a bit overwhelmed. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm thinking of keeping the colors light, but not stark white.

It might be helpful to first establish the style of bathroom you want to create. You can do this by taking into consideration the style, age and location of the home in combination with styles that appeal to you. This might help you design a bathroom that you will personally love but also fit well with the rest of the home. Then look for colours to compliment that style, you can include textures and materials too. Compile these ideas into a design mood board and colour palette for the room.

By having an idea of the overall style and colour pallet, you will find making the choice of individual items will become easier.

Remember to also enjoy the design process, get creative! Exploring finished rooms on Houzz might also help guide and inspire you.

If you're looking for extra reassurance on your individual choices, you can involve others by showing them the look you're after and if they think your individual choices will help you create the look you're going for.

Start with something you love and build up a concept. For me I wanted grey floors and some grey and some white walls. I had always evisioned white cabinet as it was in my sample pic and the display home I loved. but during construction just before ordering cabinet and tiles my husband said he wanted oak cabinet doors and subway white tiles instead of the larger white tiles. I said if subway then textured ones. We went with these changes and it all looks great.

Moral of my story is the process is an evolution. Go look at tiles and cabinets and other fixtures Look at lots of pics and build your ideas then change them again. You may find a light fixture you love and build around that. Who knows.

Michelle, I'm not a builder but am building with hubby, a single storey limestone home. Our daughter built a two storey limestone home just down the road, that hubby also built for her and the extra foundations she had to install would be at least twice more than we have for our single storey, not to mention that there were allot of short walled founds leading off the perimeter of her home to assist in less likelihood of wall roll out and the inspector called it. Cost for you, will depend on whether you have adequate foundations to carry a second storey and usually that is never the case. All the lower walls will need double the support and it usually has to carry on down to the foundations, depending on whether you have a solid concrete slab or concrete stumps that are accessible. This would mean most of the plaster being removed and hoping that you find no nasty surprises as far as the condition of the existing frame in the home, the builder would as I mentioned, have to add structural supports to carry the second storey. Most often, second stories are built with a hardiplank type exterior and certainly not brickwork as you would then difinitely have to have extra foundations in for such a reno and you would have to start asking yourself if it isn't better to demolish as this type of reno can be extremely costly. You might be lucky but probably highly unlikely, to have adequate structional integrity to be able to add a second storey, without everything I have mentioned to be skipped in any way. I hazzard a guess that such a reno would cost you $250,000+ and maybe more. Would love to know what you finally decide to do and your builders estimate. Good luck. Cheers, Barbara

I have a shower over bath combo' which its plastic resin something? It's a old bungalow and pitifully small. The amount of times I have nearly slipped over getting out, or lost my balance with soap in my eyes/ or after having a glass of wine. hate hate it. I did see a shower room with a additional hand held device and a over head shower. I thought that good for the odd squirt your feet down. The next owners will probably rip it all out and start again any way when design ideas change.

Given your vanity choice and tile choices, you look like you favour a transitional style. The dado height suits this well. We've done similar in 2 of our bathrooms. It would be lower (1.2m) than your existing tiling around the bath.

View from powder room with door open is looking through the hallway section into an office / spare bedroom built in wardrobe (if the door is open). Not too concerned with that as door to room is usually closed. I definitely think I'd prefer to save that money and use it on something else, like maybe popping in a little basin over the top of the toilet.... I think it also creates easier access to the toilet when in the main part of the house instead of so another turn... Re the measurements: 930 x 2130 for laundry external door including trim. Also, I am currently just having a look at revamping the toilet room and am in process of painting the walls antique white from a very dark purple (don't worry, going to add interest in there somewhere won't be all white haha) and now figuring out how to embrace the tiles I have with some design and colour choices with walls and window trim or resurface them.. I have a photo below if anyone has ideas but maybe this warrants another post in a different section.. (also note i had to paint on the top of the wall tiles in a line as previous painter had done a shocker of a job...) I am contemplating a toilet/basin unit to save space and putting a kind of inserted custom shelf and frame option in the window to hide it (ugly old window with old paint marks all around the outside) to put plants and some small glass vases on but still have some light coming through. (Also, can't remove the window as I can't match the bricks outside (80's mottled brick) as directly in front of entertaining area. I also can't afford to replace at this stage).

Save quite a few more pics of bathrooms that you like in your lookbook here in Houzz and start a board on Pinterest too. After 100 or so pics themes will emerge and you can narrow down your choices.
