Architrave/Moulding width for modern home help

Hi Houzzers
Going through design at the moment, and picked up on detail regarding architraves. Planning for a 2 storey home, modern contemporary style (oak floor/white). Downstairs windows are all plaster reveals. 3m high ceiling downstairs and 2.7m upstairs. Door heights are 2.4m
Designer has planned for skirting 140mm height downstairs and 90mm upstairs.
The designer has recommended architraves to be 40mm wide. He says it is a more modern look. Our current house is 70mm which is what we are used to.
What do you think of a thinner architrave/moulding?
Ive sketched up and attached below.
Also, on the same note: designer has suggested for upstairs windows (bedrooms) to have 40mm architraves/mouldings.

Comments (14)You need to do as Wuff advises - also check that there's no water coming in from above (if it's failed, it's time to think about a bathroom reno or partial reno) - if this is Ok then definately get your exhaust fan serviced or replaced (get the most efficient you can and one that can be programmed for a delayed turn-off) and then hit the entire bathroom in a bit of a cleaning frenzy. I can see that you've got sections of grout coming out - it's also worth re-grouting (horrible job) - just make sure that you remove all the grout before applying fresh grout. I find that hot water, white vinegar (equal parts) and a half a cup of rubbing alcohol with a few drops of dishwashing detergent work a treat in any space but particularly where there's any porous surfaces (make sure you use rubber gloves - it's pretty harsh on your hands) - just replenish your solution when it starts getting grubby and cold - the alcohol and vinegar kill the mould spores, and the water and dishwashing provides general washing assistance. (Bleach will take the black colouring from mould but wont kill it completely in porous surfaces such as grout so use bleach afterward if the vinegar and alcohol don't work). Make sure that you dry out the area fully - if you've got a dehumidifier now's the time to use it. Going forward, get a glass squeegee and use it to get rid of excess water after you've used your shower - also cut down on the amount of steam generated if you can. You can also make a homemade bathroom cleaner (3 parts water, 1 part rubbing alcohol, 1 part vinegar a small dash of dishwashing detergent and 15-20 drops of teatree oil) spray it down and use bicarb of soda sprinkled on a cloth to clean down your tiles, tub and grout....See MoreHelp identifying an architrave era
Comments (7)I love them, but agree they're not Victorian. The architrave is certainly craftsman, similar to what you'd see in Californian Bungalows. Do you have a photo of the facade of your home? Sometimes when styles were merging you can even see some Edwardian elements, which may make it an option to comfortably merge the styles - risky but at least it's authentic?! Furthermore, sometimes if all your trims are painted the same colour, they can tie in, but I know what you mean. It's a toss up between having it in keeping by using replica Victorian architrave & doors; or keeping something that's quite beautiful and authentic and probably beautiful quality and hand made! Comments (10)Ania, funnily enough I almost posted this very tongue-in-cheek comment: 'If anyone ever finds a fail-safe way to keep dust out of homes in this country I would like to know!' We live in very dusty regional area and have shadow-line skirting. It looks great but it does catch dust. Comments (11)The depends on the look you want to achieve. If you want an ultra modern look, then installing from the ceiling is the best way to go. If you want a more classic or traditional look then install the rod just below the cornice allowing enough room for the brackets/rod etc. 50mm below is good. That way you can opt for a decorative rod. I prefer s-fold from the ceiling than on a rod but it all looks great in the end either way. All the best with it.
