Just to throw another option into the mix – look up Marmoleum for your kitchen floor – it's a modern version of linoleum (not vinyl!). It comes in the most amazing range of colours and looks (about 300 to choose from – from very bright primary colours through all the secondary and tertiary colours, marbled or stripey or plain), has all the green credentials (97% natural components like linseed oil, wood flour, jute etc; nearly 50% recyclable content and 100% biodegradable – it even smells great when it is first laid), extremely hard-wearing, easy to clean and maintain, comes in either sheets, tiles or planks and it is quiet to walk on. It is used in hospitals and schools because of it hygienic characteristics and doesn't give off volatile gases like vinyls. We have put it down in our new kitchen about six months ago and I love it. One of the things I love most is how quiet it is – no clicking, clanking noises as people walk on it. It sweeps clean easily, wipes clean (for spots), mops beautifully every now and then and looks wonderful. Highly recommend it!

Since this thread started I've moved house and renovated two more bathrooms and this "step" issue is definitely becoming a headache. You know, we are such slavish followers of trends, I just have to wonder at times how much we are becoming victims of them too. When I built my first house over 50 years ago, most homes were built on piers with timber flooring and concrete was only used in bathrooms and laundries, but the levels were adjusted so when tiles were laid in wet areas the transition was minimal. Floor tiles were also thinner than today's tiles, in most cases they were smaller tiles too and not these great slabs we use today that obviously need to be thicker for strength. Now we are building more slab on ground homes, no provision is being made for the thickness of floor tiles to ensure a more seamless transition between areas. My front entrance is tiled and has a 2cm "step" down to the lounge and family room areas and even that 2cm I find people constantly tripping over. I plan on removing these tiles and replacing the whole entry/kitchen/family area with vinyl planking. Carpet in the lounge room helps offset that step a little but I was told recently by people who have addressed this issue this way that putting an extra layer of underfelt within the doorway area works very well to help offset this problem. When I renovated the ensuite I now have this step issue but the tiles had been glued down with an unknown product of super strength that gave my bathroom guy a lot of grief trying to jackhammer up - took him 2 days to remove them and screed the floor to his standard - and he decided he could not do the main bathroom in a realistic time frame to meet the price he quoted me, he felt he could not even guarantee the standard of work he wanted to achieve so his suggestion was to tile over the existing tiles and when he got to the doorway he would add an extra part tile sloping to down to the floor level similar to what pucciplan described with his timber. He assured me he had done it with many other renovations, it was barely noticeable and would solve the issue much easier and cheaper for me and far less time consuming. In the meantime as I have carpet in the hallway we heard of the idea of using an extra layer of underlay and I've chosen this option. My laundry is right opposite the bathroom and those tiles will be replaced too. On close inspection of the original construction, we discovered no waste drain was put into the laundry, the tiles were drained towards the external door, which is apparantly acceptable .............EXCEPT, they then put a dam across the floor inside the doorway to stop rainwater coming in under the external door!!!! Now the laundry tiles will be laid over the top of the existing ones as well to allow for any possible accident needing drainage. Fortunately I've had no weather issues but we will put a rubber flap at the base of the door, just in case, and I will again do the extra layer of underlay under the carpet and hopefully will achieve a satisfactory result. At least the two doorways will match. Quite frankly though, I'm finding so many design issues these days, I really think the whole home building industry needs a thorough overhaul. I think as I age too, so many more issues are coming to light BUT they are obviously issues that could affect anyone of any age. I think we need to forget "trends" that don't consider the big picture of things and come back down to basic commonsense. HU - I'm really at a loss as to how your builder managed to get a 6.5cm step to the bathroom, that is absolutely ridiculous. The only thing I can think of is there may have been a slope issue for drainage, but surely it could still not have been that much, anything that much out should have been picked up when the building was inspected during construction. "Normal" is a good excuse for laziness or shoddy workmanship. I think from reading your posts, you are in an apartment?? You would then have slab floors?? Therefore I can't see the need for the step to be above 2cm. Definitely take this further - Fair Trading should be able to help you, the standard heights for steps varies according to location and use - it is a bit of a minefield to work out. Good luck. Hi, I am at same stage of renovating kitchen, regional Western Australia, harder to get different but I have found these at my local tile shop, that had to be ordered in, not up yet but our house is 1960 build and I had the red brick exposed with glass over the top, while very unique and lots of positive comments it was in a chimney location and debris fell behind and I have had it replaced once to clean it up and it happened again so I am afraid it is going, I am covering with same stone as bench top in fire place but I am using some marble tiles on other area. I wanted the stone behind stove top for cleaning purposes but I love the tiles I have selected I hope they look as good once up, I agree about not wanting house stuck too much in 50/60, my bricks were red and I found it quite dark when cooking as well, I am looking forward to clean white behind stove, I actually found the harshness of the old brick a bit depressing.. I don't think industrial look is for me .. I love your lights I think I actually had them on my list... the whole look looks fabulous, I hope you are surviving, I have had enough of cooking in the laundry but I must say I could write a book on the creative gourmet using $29 electric frying pan from target, I have fallen in love with it. :)

Hi guys, wow thank you for being such champs with all the great advice! Even my partner, the handyman of the household, is chuffed we found this site with such great community. The room does feel overwhelming as we took over the property (rental so not keen to go full out with ripping things out to replace them) with appliances included. For 3 years we've just been prioritising our career and family (both of ours are overseas) and with The Great Pause of 2020 happening, there is a lot of space to tackle what has been too overwhelming for us. UPDATES! We will slowly shift into kitchen reno gear gradually, but looking forward to share gradual changes to the space. [budget] To be honest, it's a rental property where we don't plan to live in 2 years down. I'd say $500 or below, but knowing most of the $$ is going into organising and new shelving (thinking of new shelves to put 1L airtight jars for all our grains/ pasta/ baking/ nuts - as they are currently all stashed away in the cabinet). So no installers, just me and the old school way of self taught youtube videos and essential (for my sanity) trips to Bunnings! [clutter] Great honest feedback, we do have too much crap lying around. I've cleared out two basket worth of stuff and once I reorganise the cabinets, most of the stuff on the bench will disappear. This will now be a monthly habit + the idea that if something doesn't have its place in the kitchen, it wont even enter the space. [light] The horrendous shade is gone, thanks for helping me convince the man. It feels so good to have the 1/4 top section of the room brightened. Feels like there is more room to utilise. It's quite tall as our already considered tall step ladder can only let us reach the top of the upper cabinets. What should we do with all the extra space near the ceiling/ We are thinking to install some floating shelves and just put plants, which wouldn't require us to check in every 4-5 days so occasionally climbing the heights is fine. I can anticipate accidental drops already, but no kids at home so can deal with cleaning up shards. @Kate fantastic call on the light in the dining area, hoping to extend space as best I can. Tbh, would love to take off the wall, but don't want to damage the wiring and also can't be bothered as above point on rental. [painting] Yes! Colour was definitely one of the biggest road block I've had. White is definitely going up first, it works as a great base and if we want to change up the tone we can just paint over it. Glad to hear advice on working with the existing colours, i love a good vintage, but whenever there is more than 4 colour in a room (green from plants don't count), it gets a bit too much for me. (Happy to hear blush and charcoal are approved). Perhaps let's revisit the colour brainstorm once I've done a white paint on. It will help you guys visualise what better as I gradually clean up the space. I won't be retiling. Probably won't even be doing a tile paint. I've heard horror stories on tile paint and how they decided to just retile afterwards. Partner is keen though, open to ideas after the white paint is on. @siriuskey i love the idea of soft green, it looks wonderful in a friend's kitchen where there wasn't much light. She actually paired white ceiling light with a soft 24/7 tabletop warm light, it somehow worked quite well. If anyone has any advice on colour pairing, I'm all ears. I think I will weigh in on what I would like to tackle between the bench tops or the fridge/ stove as these are quite dominant (as pointed out by @brizcs). Will call on advice for tile painting if we get to that stage. If I am to start with the floor tiles there are bits to fix too, 1-2 tiles have somehow loosened up and one's even broken.. trying to tackle small bits with big changes first like @Kate suggested! @siriuskey the 70s cabinet timber definitely has its own style, I may try to paint that massive board above it white first, then decide if I'd still like to go ahead with the cabinet timber painting. Will look into transforming the fridge and stove, but also aligning w budget. @brizcs actually think i'll have a look into this rather than the paneling, thanks for the tips on where i can start my research on. Definitely not a fan of the colours of the fridge and stove. Unsure about a new stovetop bc our current one is broken (oven don't work but stove does), however landlord is being a prick and would rather get her friend (uncertified) in to try fixing it. They popped over to try to figure it out themselves but we put a plug to it as we don't want them both to explode in our kitchen. So the stovetop is unfortunately stuck, heck I probably have to check to see if I can even do any work on it as there may be some restrictions to prevent bad gas fire x the paint/finish combo. [under bench lights] This is where I'll need some advice. I've never installed this before and am stuck with power source options. Without getting tradies in to rewire into the walls, my only options seems like batteries. We do have a power socket of four (on the other end of the bench, prefer to not drag wires all over the place), however 2 are taken permanently and the remaining two I would like to keep free. Don't mind changing out chargeable batteries now and then. I'm envisioning it being a simple task of stick LED light strip + stick battery box (maybe paint it to 'hide' it), please advise if I'm being too naive here. NEW IDEAS [Theme: open access design] This means shelves with all our jars out. Mainly to see all the food we already have so we use them up before we hoard too much. Same goes for things like knives (magnet strips), spatula (hung up to rail with grids), pots/ pans, wine etc. I very much like a functional retro vibe for my kitchen I don't need things to be glossy and full marble. I like the industrial practical way of seeing where things are and knowing what tools i have immediately. Thoughts? Will send through photos of the side I didn't show, it's where the sink is. And the sink will be a whole new category itself which I'm not touching till a later stage. [floating shelves on tiles] I have forgotten to mention that I'm hoping to install this below my cabinets on the left for spices. For the right cabinet I will either install mug hooks or move the mugs entirely to previously mentioned shelving option. Will definitely add LED lights under the cabinets and under the spice shelf.
