How can I improve the ugly facade of my 1970s house?
Comments (39)Keep the brick, please don't paint or render. Both eat into your budget (rendering in particular is not cheap), and will mean more ongoing upkeep (render still needs to be painted on a regular basis and with a two-storey house, that is a lot more work). Our house is rendered and we would never have it again. Whenever the house moves, the render doesn't, so is prone to cracking or, over time, pieces even falling off. Even subtle movement can cause hairline cracks, which means regular patching and painting. Quite frankly, most people render an older house to make it look modern, but when rendering becomes passe (which I think is already starting to happen), then the house will look dated again (and render is almost impossible to remove once its on). Also, if you're in an area prone to termites, termites can get in between the render and the brickwork and you won't see the telltale signs of "mud" at the access points to let you know they're there. As far as the rest of the house goes, I totally agree with what Timandra Design recommended....See MoreSUGGESTIONS TO MODERNIZE/RE-HAUL DRAB 70'S FRONT FACADE/HOME
Comments (17)Do a google image search of "nuts and berries architecture", "sevitt and Pettit", and perhaps "Sydney school architecture". Your house has been inspired by those styles/movements from late 60 and 70s Australian architecture and you should be able to find images of sensitive renovations that inspire you....See Moreideas for facade/garage 70s brick house
Comments (5)You are on the right track with the Monument garage door, and possibly changing the glazing. I wouldn't tack on anything to the brickwork as it will always looked tacked on, and won't go with the rest of the house. Nothing worse than making a "feature'" when trying to conceal something - it just draws attention to it. Continue to make your porch and entry the feature which draws your eye, rather than distracting it with a feature garage wall. Where do you start and where do you stop when applying a cladding over brickwork? The rear garage wall can probably be seen form the neighbours front yard, so how far around the corner will you need cladding? It will need to be carefully resolved and detailed around the window sills and reveals. A better bet would be spending the money that has been earmarked for cladding on landscaping instead to the front of the garage with some dense, ever-green shrubbery. At least it will look natural and not draw attention to the garage wall and away from your front entry. Comments (5)I guess it depends on your budget . I'd tend to initially keep it 'simple' , and do the retaining posts in charcoal , or even a silvery grey . The trim I initially thought charcoal too , but your windows look like they may be white frames , or aluminium , so in that case stick with the white theme too , although the existing garage door/gates in mostly white is then too much white IMO , but you want to change that anyway . Because of the shape , the door is going to be custom -- I'd do a cedar panel type door , or possibly a single piece tilt door may close flush , but I suspect it won't . So clean lines , a clean look to the house , with a darker contrast in the retaining wall . If that doesn't look right , and/or you have a bigger budget , then a new retaining wall in concrete or blocks , with an off-white render , will look classy , but its mixing up eras and styles a bit too much for my liking -- next thing you'll want to square off the garage and all thge windows , and render the whole house . That would work , cost a lot , and look good -- but why ? Apart from the yellow , theres not too much wrong , so embrace it !...See MoreEbony HL
