Reduce bath to 1700 and make vanity 500 deep with existing layout

Seems like your mind are set on the 1700 back to wall ?

I don't think either option works to gain storage space.

a custom built vanity and the bath off centre would allow space for a bigger shower and more storage

The top left corner ‘vacant’ space has me concerned. Having a stand-alone bath, alongside a deeper vanity for storage sake creates this inaccessible wasted space. An alternative would be leaving the set in bath in place or moved to this corner.
OkLouise, your idea addresses this giving me extra bench space although the underneath would be vacant adjacent to the bath. So either a vacant hole or a closed in false panel?

yes it would be a blind corner next to the bath but the bath would be lower than the counter so the vanity could have drawers on either side of the sink and a door under the sink and worth it for the extra counter (with or without storage in the hard to reach blind corner) and with generous wall cabinets and drawers could look something like this

...but i would prefer a built in bath to the freestanding

Yeah that’s similar to what it is now, but with a narrow depth vanity. Here’s the pics when we moved in a couple of years ago....

the bath taps on the wall are better than i could have expected and new vanity won't be cheap but will be so much better

Having just had a family member under go hip replacement surgery I would suggest the following layout to allow for easy access and usability while still working/looking as a normal bathroom.

A glass shower screen allows light across all bathroom spaces.and opens it up to full width

The 900 x 500 floating vanity with space for a rubbish bin under, Wall Mirrored recessed shaving cabinet above vanity dropped down to lower height above the vanity giving a better line to the vanity area as this is built into the wall would also allow for vanity lights either hanging each side, or fixed wall lights' these lights to be positioned to reflect light onto to your face and not behind as it will create a shadow.

The vanity is full width from wall to glass shower screen, your bathroom installer will advise on sealing this

A nook in the wall in the shower at a height to suit both standing and sitting positions to hold any shampoo etc, I also prefer a wide nook as this gives better balance and adds visual width to the space, plus more storage

A 900 wide opening into the shower bath space'

A bench at the end of the bath as you enter. this could be timber slats, for visual spa effect or could be tiled over as per bath with a storage draw under'

There are plenty of spaces to hang towels chees

Thank you all for your responses and ideas, you've certainly given me more food for thought and inspired me to think a little more 'out of the box'. Now comes the hard part - the decision making !!

Just another quick question, have any of you had the lived experience of a shower room ie with the shower open and adjacent to the bath and whole area getting wet? I wonder if it will become a pain to live with....

consider this, if it;s a separate shower you have 4 walls and doors to clean, with this you will get some water into bath so much easier to clean just using a shower spray.

This is my personnel choice for bathrooms needing a both and shower and regardless of the family situation, keeps the wet in the same space,

the shower is also able to make us of the bath space to make showering more luxurious for 6' plus people and for those that shave legsa place to sit on side of bath

All very good points..... and I do like the 'open' look of the plan also. To be honest the main bathroom is not used all that often. However I'm conscious of longer term needs and/or re sale purposes so attempting to cover all bases.

I have another smaller ensuite to do also, but I won't bore you all with that one as the configuration cannot be altered so its just a cosmetic change. But all in all I just want to get the designs 'right' for all of them if I'm going to spend the money to update them.

Yep, bath is not the priority however because the house is a larger family size home, I feel it's a necessary inclusion. Decent size accessible shower and good storage is the priority.

A relative has more recently remodelled her main bathroom just as you indicated, non slip floors, wide open shower 'area' with a curtain...... fairly basic and looks like a hospital bathroom, but works for her.

I have also looked at your ensuite and will have another look today as I now have a neighbours open plan kitchen to help with cheers

shower curtains can look stunning if done right, I think it's always a good idea to have a spare for quick change over

what about vanityopposite door with shower next to it and bath next to door.

problem with bath next to the door is that the walkway is too narrow..

You know, putting a triangular spa bath into that bottom left corner (on the plan) would really open up possibilities ... here are a rough couple of sketches to get the idea across ...

Where the window is make this a sliding door and place shower outside. Bring the outdoors in and vice versa

As mentioned above, unfortunately walls and doors cannot be altered Adam, it's on a second storey. Some genuine thinking 'outside the box' though !

My thoughts for what they are worth.

Can the window be cut down in width and if needed increased in height so the sill finishes at the bathtub hob level, if not leave the sill height as is.

I have allowed for a 1650 long x 750 wide with a 75mm tiled hob surround.

You have a;

1400 long x 1050 wide shower.

1425 long Vanity. If you want wall cabinets either side of mirror they can be recessed into the existing wall frame (if the wall is framed) and mirror can continue across cabinet doors. If the wall is solid brick/block you have room to build out a wall frame anyway.

I'm a bit short on time to explain much more but hope this may help as another option.

I think bathtub should be directly opposite door. Then you have a wall to wall shower by the window. See attached

To me the long bench is important. I would have a 1700 built in bath. The bench will have a blind cabinet at end of bath. I had that. Stored the excess tiles in it. Cleaning around a back to wall bath if you have only a small gap or open under bench would be a pain

If you don't mind the shower panels cut your window in half, then yes, you can have shower and bath at the same wall.

corner back to wall bath is much better option than the normal the back to wall.

The window on left make this full length, so it can open out on to a ferny/orchid garden, set up with automatic drip system put a couple of tree ferns in connect this outside garden to the inside by hanging a fern from the ceiling. This would make the whole area feel special and bigger.
