Positioning of Patio Help

Hi all,

I was wondering everyone's opinion on the positioning of a patio i am looking to get built (a simple steel gable extension from the existing roof).

I originally planned for the patio to be in the right hand corner of the back yard if coming out of the house (Option A) however i was told by one of the companies that came to quote me that it is much more common to extend your living area and have the patio centered at our sliding doors.

My concern is that it will reduce the spaciousness of the backyard (and resale value) as there will then be only 2 small patches of grass on either side of the patio. One of the unique characteristics of our unit is that it has a large rectangular strip of backyard which is not normal for units of this size in this area.

The house is north east facing located in Perth and our living/kitchen doesnt get too much light as it is. I am afraid extending the patio directly from the living room will further darken the house.

Hi Tongaface

I assume the idea of the extension is to increase usable area for entertaining

With this in mind, think about which space in the back yard you use now when you have visitors

You are the one who will be using the space, not the man who gives the quote!

I think the right hand corner option sounds good, as this will still give you expanse of lawn

If you are concerned about light inside the house, consider translucent roofing instead of solid material

Perhaps even horizontal louvres that can be opened according to the weather

Or at least white material for the ceiling, as this should reflect light into the building

Let us know what you decide - I'd love to see the after shots!

Thanks for the feedback Julia - yes you are right, the purpose of the patio was to have an area for outdoor entertaining.

Pendant light choice would usually be for a specific purpose so if you will move things around I would have a rethink. It may be possible to have a pendant with a long lead & hooks for the cord that would allow you to move it within a reasonable distance of the connection point. Maybe some general lighting might work better e.g. or two or three directional spotlights along edges or the ridge line & on dimmers if possible. Subtle strip lighting at the top of the grey wall & the addition of a feature decorative wall hanging & potted plants would look nice too.

Hi Deanne, I can see one solution for the study - do a sliding door. The only way I can see for the bedroom is to rework the ensuite, walk-in robe and laundry which mightn't be what you want...but it's a thought. Laundries hidden away in cupboards take up so much less space so if you swing the laundry fixtures to face the other way than on your plans, you could move it up to be accessed from the dining area (remembering that you'd rarely be doing laundry during a dinner party anyway and it'd look like built in floor to ceiling cabinetry). This means you could "pinch" about 1m from there, move the WIR and ensuite up to give you a doorway - you'd miss about 10-20cm of robe space. If you swing the orientation of the shower 90 degrees you'll be able to make up for the loss. We have a laundry cupboard in our kitchen - its 150cm x 75cm has a front loader washer on the floor, a dryer hung above (which gives additional storage for laundry detergent, stain remover and the iron) and a sink beside it with more storage underneath and a clothes rail that sits over the sink for drip dry items). The ironing board neatly sits in front of the sink (the sink I hardly ever use - except when we have parties and then it's filled with ice and the ironing board then tucks behind a bedroom door). Looking at the existing length of the laundry (about 3.8m) you'd have heaps of room for under bench hampers, storage and a broom cupboard if that's how you go. Good luck.

a thin layer of gravel in a border of your left over bricks would be quick, cheap and OK to walk on if the under surface is level and compacted..or giant concrete pavers or new railway sleepers could look interesting and re-use as many of the existing bricks as possible to connect with the area outside

If you use one of the smaller (eg. under 800 in width) 'back to wall' style 'freestanding' baths, so it can go right up against the wall then you should be ok. A fully freestanding bath needs adequate room between it and the wall for cleaning). Generally, showers are best if 900mm or wider but this arrangement means you can gain a little elbow room above the bath. I'd still suggest allocating min 800mm for shower - most people would centre the shower head and so you don't want to reduce the elbow room too much on the glass screen side (hope that makes sense?) ...If you combine an up to 900mm vanity with a mirrored wall cabinet you should have a decent amount of storage space.

At the end is my rec. that way you don’t have to walk around it and can use the design to screen off the side fence.

i suggest that the central patio is a common mistake that takes light away from internal rooms for the sake of external appearance especially in winter when the patio is less used..if you want/need shelter for the sliding doors consider a narrow verandah over the paved area for a sheltered walkway and the smaller patio on the right hand side with easy access from the laundry ... this creates a shaded sitting area with a generous lawn although some panels of transluscent roofing will help avoid darkness in the kitchen and it would be excellent if the patio could extend to the rear fence
