Kitchen table and chairs help!
Hi everyone, we have recently completed a kitchen Reno and are struggling with what table and chairs to use. The table in the photos is our current timber table, old but solid. I’m wondering if I should give it a facelift (maybe white legs and timber top to match the Blackbutt floors) plus replace the chairs with more casual ones and maybe a bench for the kitchen side OR get a smaller round table.
We have a seperate dining space with a more formal 8 seater timber table plus an outdoor setting on the deck which fit up to 10 so don’t need it to accommodate more than 4-5 for weeknight dinners. The current table is about 90 x 150mm.
Also struggling with stools that are low profile to go under narrow overhang.
My cabinets are white on the outside and dark brown grey in the island. Benchtops are Galaxy White so kinda off white flecked with grey. The cabinet behind the table is narrow in the same browny grey as the island used for storage.
Any help greatly appreciated!

4 years agoIt would be a shame to not recycle your table. I would paint/restain either white or same colour as island and storage. I really like your chair fabric, I would keep that and paint/re stain legs. The fabric breaks up the other solid colours. I'm not sure about the current wood colour of table with your floors, I think they are two different shades, the table appears orange, against the floor. depends on what look your going for.
What height stools do you require for kitchen island?

Comments (12)Hi Sam, I know where you're coming from, I too wanted to buy such a beautiful ornate table for my new home still under construction but it just wasn't going to look like it matched the modern home I wanted to put it in. I also wanted to feel like it could be used as most kitchen tables in a home are used, especially for me living on a farm, for eating or repairing something on some newspaper etc...impossible to do on such a beautiful table, you would ruin it to see it scratched !!! Not to put a damper on your tastes but your home will look so much better and have more style if you continue to try to match what you already have and that's at least a stunning kitchen that you've shown us all on this forum. If you think of the style and colour of your kitchen everytime you want to buy something or decorate, it will hep ground you to keep it similar. I understand there are people who say it's nice to have countless pieces of furniture that are all different in some way, as it can look like you acquired them along your journey in life but I think that this mixture of designs and colours doesn't gel in a modrrn house very well at all, perhaps a quaint old cottage but not a modern home with a lovely kitchen like you already have!!!...See MoreDining table & chairs
Comments (11)As no one discussed whether the size of the table was correct, I thought I would throw in a few tips... 1. The table should be placed a minimum of a metre away from the walls (or buffet) so that when someone is sitting down, a person can easily get behind this person to sit down at the next chair. 2. Allow 0.5m within the alignment of a passageway, so that people aren't encroaching onto the passageway when seated. Also so the furniture is not jutting out visually into the hallway. 3. You need to allow for comfortable passage beside the island bench through to the back door. From the plan shown, all this will work. To know whether the table will fit and where it should be placed. It is best to mark out the position of the table on the floor and then put chairs up to this so you can imagine where the chairs will be in relation to the space (both when in use and pushed in). Better still, so you can fully visualise the volume the table takes up, get a smaller table and cut up a cardboard to the right size and put it on top. You could still have your table and just have the chairs down one side and at the end and just move when needed, this could look beautiful and it will highlight the buffet, similar to these photos but instead of a bench seat you will have your buffet and there will still be room for you to access it.
