"Need help" - outside deck overlooking ugly roof
Comments (21)As a minimalist I would forego all plants, put in a low wall and use slumped glass or preferably glass block. This would let in the light and also make a cosy seating area in winter. I've found glass block to be a wonderful insulator on a west facing wall - warm in winter, but keeps out summer heat too. This would also extend your living area, keep out flies and mozzies, and prevent you seeing that awful roof next door. You could also take the shadecloth off the windows leading on to that deck, which would be a bonus. I'm not a fan of shadecloth, and would always look for an alternative solution...See MoreDesperate for help with our ugly house!
Comments (22)Render it MAYBE. Remove the orange bathroom tiles. Replace the rocks with a clean edge. Emphasise the vertical lines of the walls of brick and the vertical lines that the window can form, being one on top of the other. Vertical narrow pencil trees (? name) I think that God gave you steps for a reason. You might put narrow pencil conifers at the front corners of that, too. If you remove the steps, you will be broke, and you will replace them with an even uglier diagonal set of steps. There is no other diagonal on the house. De-emphasise the horisontal. So, if the windows are going to be different colours, have them match one above the other. Use curtains with wide stripes. Do not emphasise the horisontal lines above the windows or the floor of the upstairs landing. Have the edge of the concrete straight, and in line with the house. Get rid of that insipid ---- under, and around, the stairs. This house represents the jet age. You need it clean. Alternatively, don't worry about it. Save your money, or spend the money on an amazing experience. It is hard for a house to look amazing if it is below street level. That is why you do not see houses in magazines below street level (as far as I know.) If you save money so you don't have money worries, there will be more love in the house and that will be more important that the appearance. If you have children, they will not give a ---- about the decoration. At all!!!...See MoreHow do we fix the facade?
Comments (8)Agree, the drawing is not giving a good look. With changing the roofline to gable, this would look better. Also I think that it needs either a verandah, balcony or awnings to add depth to the front. Being aware this would also affect your budget. I also note that you need a BAL rating. So this needs to be taken into consideration for design as well....See MoreIn desperate need of help to fix our ugly beige house!
Comments (24)That’s pretty much the height we were looking at going for so it’s an obvious step up and matches with the front door height. Good point about the front door we will probably install new crimsafe so you won’t be able to see any of the wood at all. Yes landscaping is the biggest thing we need but we are so clueless we just shoved plants in but it clearly didn’t work lol We will be planting along the driveway and putting in lights along it as well and there is a (very messy) hedge hiding the concrete in front of the door- which looks even worse right now because there’s marks from the hail. Our biggest problem is we live on rock and it’s such a steep incline so everything we plant grows weird or not at all I would love a beautiful lush front garden:( Is there anything we can do to the concrete to make it look nicer? If it’s painted with some kind of textured paint would that be too slippery?...See MoreLyn
