Hi Leah. As you like timber what about using a decorative timber screen to fit that space? Enough decoration to give privacy, but open enough so light can come through. Kind of like a picture that draws your eye rather than an ugly square of glass. I'm sure houzz has an article showing these decorative screens in various styles. I have some typical geometrical chinese wooden windows in mind, but I'm sure you could find some laser cut specialist to do your design in metal, or a carpenter to do it in wood.

Space out mirrors evenly - ceiling to floor) but hang them straight under each other The colour of the wall will make the mirrors "pop out" ... making them seem larger Turquoise on the wall will also bring out the texture and colour of the frames. 3.Obtain a 60cm tall "squared trapezium" fibreglass pot (... narrow at bottom 30cm square ... and wider at top 40cms square). Ensure there is no pot drainage hole, but if there is seal it with waterproof putty. Lay 15 cms gravel inside base of pot. The colour of the pot to echo colour of the mirror frames and carpet on stairs ... This Triad of colour will connect the area Suggest the architectural "Draecena" plant ... with three or four stems ... and let it grow to the height to hide the stair rails. Place it on a glass Lazy Susan, not only to protect flooring, but so you can turn the plant for even growth.

I would just LOVE a space like this in my home, for I would agree with dohraime above and keep the flow and view into your lounge space free-flowing. One can never have too many views to gaze at! I would make the space say "library" and: - keep the wall unit and include plenty of books - keep the gorgeous floor lamp - add 2 small lightish coloured, plain or patterned comfy chairs and a small coffee table underneath the stairs - add a complimentary console table on the wall opposite the stairs - add a large stylish mirror over the console table to bounce light around the fairly dark space - add a generously sized, patterned rug with some lightish colours in it, round or oblong, whichever you prefer. If the comfy chairs are patterned, ensure the rug coordinates with them Oh .... And a statement pendant ceiling light as well even though you have down lights already good luck!

I love Julie's industrial table ideas -- my worry though is whether they fit with the fairly 'structured' front door ? Having said that , if you did a table top in the the same style and colour as the door , it would look too corporate . So just me personally -- I'd go for a black 'rough' table top and black industrial legs ( steel or wooden ) , and maybe a brass vase , or even one glazed in a primary colour to match the rest that I'll add ! Instead of mirrors , I'd get a large ( say 1.5mtr wide and 1.2mtr tall ) abstract or similar picture in colours that match whatever else you can see ( presumably the lounge area ? ) , and if there isn't much colour , add some -- maybe some red and yellow and orange cushions and a smaller abstract pic ; or blue and green and teal ; or brown and grey and charcoal if you want to be more subdued . Just me . And as bigreader says -- a rug in the predominant clour used too -- in fact , maybe a small rug 1mtr x 1mtr or similar , but a lot larger 3mtr x 4mtr in the lounge or family or dining or whatever you can see upon entering . just some thoughts . . . . . . . . .
