Need advice on the height of the island bench.
Comments (13)This is a very interesting question and one that comes up quite often. The standard height for benchtops is 900mm from finished floor level. this has been the standard height for near on 100 years. Now, the issue is that over the last 100 years, the human race as a whole has increased in height. Even a small increase in bench height can have a huge impact on the usability of the kitchen. Have you ever stood at a sink and your back starts to ache after 5 minutes? Most of our kitchens are installed at 920mm, but some will go in higher "IF" the owners are taller...See MoreBathroom bench tops offcuts - advice?
Comments (7)I know what you mean! Living in an apartment with marble bathrooms and ceasarstone kitchen, it's not the cheapest. But it is the most durable. My partner builds furniture from marble so has sourced marble offcuts before. However marble is easier to source than caesarstone as it's not man made. I'm not too sure how easy caesarstone offcuts would be to source - might be worth just calling a few stonemasons around your area to see if they are able to find it or source for you?...See MoreNeed design advice please – island bench!
Comments (17)Hi Mark, You might also check out kitchen design considerations in the Liveable Housing Design Guidelines They suggest for Gold Level that: (A) The kitchen space should be designed to support ease of movement and adaptation with: at least 1200 mm clearance in front of fixed benches and appliances (excluding handles); and slip resistant flooring. (B) Floor finishes should extend under kitchen cabinetry to enable cupboards to be removed without affecting the flooring. Where fixtures cannot be easily removed (e.g. ovens which are built in) the floor finishes should not be continued. And for Platinum (highest) Level that: As for the gold level except that the kitchen space described in (A) should be designed to support ease of movement and adaptation with: at least 1550 mm clearance in front of fixed benches and appliances (excluding handles); slip resistant flooring; and task lighting installed above work spaces. These standards are being considered for incorporation into the National Construction Code (BCA). They will not appear for a few years yet, but by considering and incorporating these principles now it may future-proof the house to some extent....See MoreHelp! Need advice on timber bench choice
Comments (8)Hi jh13, I don't know what you are using for your cabinet faces or your other bench tops, or how you need your island bench top to perform to give a fully considered reply, however based on your just your question, I would suggest using Blackbutt tops or if you want lots of this "rustic" effect, then you may also like to consider as an option. Hope this helps, Malcolm....See MoreKate
