What style of architecture is my house?

Hi all,

My mother recently passed away and my siblings and I will be putting her house on the market. I was wondering what architectural period you think the house is. (Late Edwardian? Interwar?) And, any suggestions for revamping the front of the house?

We were thinking to paint it with a grey scheme, but incorporating the red, colorbond guttering. We were also thinking of tiling the verandah, maybe in a small diamond pattern, but not sure if this would be over investing.

(The buyer would probably renovate the back of the house, so we won’t do anything to that except clean up the backyard. But we thought it might be worth investing some money in the front).

Hi Emma,
I think a grey colour scheme would work perfectly, I would pressure wash your porch and steps and it could blend with the house colour, leave beautiful weeping cherry as it makes a real statement, remove all plants from beneath it and use either a stone mulch in a soft grey ‘Oriental Spark’ is gorgeous, the more simple the more stylish, some new pots of lush plants, a new black setting would compliment the front and make it look inviting to buyers, so sorry to hear about your mum.

Thanks Julie! Some great suggestions, especially about pressure washing the verandah. That might be a good low-cost option. If we chose a grey color scheme, do you think we could keep the red, colorbond guttering? Thanks so much for attaching all the photos, very helpful!

This is the type of tiling we were thinking of doing...but I am in two minds. I think it would make the front of the house look a lot better, but it is 16m square, so would cost around $1800, which might be too much to spend.

Treasure it for the gem of a 1940s/50s home it is, complete with glorious wrought iron work. Suggestions have been made as to how to boost the height to meet current building codes. You will regret updating the exterior for what is likely to be a one that will date quickly and be higher maintenance . It is only a matter of time until such homes are as treasured as Victorian terraces or Californian bungalows. It is an icon of its time. Accept it for what t is. Why make your house look like a fashion victim of 2019, when it stands in almost the full glory of its original period? It will also save you a fortune too! But yes, minimise the concrete! and add a garden that refects the period the house was built. Roses if you like them, with maybe a magnolia or crepe myrtle feature tree but for lower maintenance try some architectural and ground covering succulents. You could also go with edibles like feature citrus and olives for a Mediterranean feel.

Thank you dohraime. I like you hypothesis about step feature at the gable front and art deco era. I think that was probably the closest this I could find at this stage in terms of visual similarity. The living area connected to the kitchen was extended back probably around 70s-80s. As far as we know, the Italian gentleman had a big family with four kids, so he needed more space for beds. The other two rooms at the front may have been renovated at some point as well. Cornices in the front three rooms including hall way definitely look more elaborate than one in the extension area. We have only three windows left to us that was from the era of original owners. They were time double hung windows that were very old, very fragile, and difficult to open. These three were at the two front rooms and a kitchen as pictured in 2010 and 2014 sales. As far as I can see from the old pictures of 2010 sales, windows in the extension living room were double hung windows of the same style as well. So they may have been replaced at some point in time. Previous owner replaced most of the windows to double glazed units, and we completed the remaining three after moving in last year.

It was crossover between the 70s and the 80s modernist Cathedral ceiling open planned home with clay usually with clay bricks you can find planting Aspendale Gardens as well all englehart is a builder of this style or was that have a different style now that's a job with builder's they change their Styles to keep up with the modern wants current you be better off buying a second-hand one because people have tried to build them and all the wood in them is very expensive and he better off buying a second-hand one because to build new the wood is so expensive to do the beans and everything in the there's some in Brighton with the use the word seder

Hi there, the proportions of your home at the front are very good to work with - you could easily go cottage style or modern. I think it is the apricot/beige colour of the render and the black windows and ironwork at the front that is letting down the facade, luckily you have a roof colour that will work with many wall paint colours so lots of options for repainting the render. I cant see if your windows are timber or aluminium, but if timber painting them off-white would make a huge difference as would replacing the ironwork posts with timber posts, some timber trims and railing. That style of facade works equally well with a bold paint colour or a lighter colour, so again you can opt for a classic or modern look. Is all that paving needed, is it for parking? If you dont want to remove it then perhaps just taking out some pavers in the center to form a large square and planting a feature tree (edged with box hedges or planted around with groundcover) would look amazing and break up the large paved area. Julie's images show how great box hedges look, using them to line driveways and divide areas creates a formal and neat look.

You could always leave the guttering till last and see if it blends in with the rest of the look, but I do think it will look great in the darker colour grey.

That tiling is lovely, but see how it comes up first by pressure washing the front , you may be happy with the look, another thought is you could always paint the verandah to save costs.

The tile pattern looks lovely, but as you have noted maybe not cost effective, however after the pressure wash if you feels it needs more you could explore painting a pattern in the style of the tile. Agree that just removing the undergrowth and leaving the one larger tree would create a simple but interesting entry.
