Renovating Design Dilemma Kitchens

Should We Nook it Out?

We have a basic build galley kitchen in our home that is not very functional for our growing family.

The west side of the kitchen backs onto the "store" also known as hubby's gym. In the gym is a "tool recess" which is more of a nook that could potentially be fitted out as a home office. It is quite long (pic 1)

Ideally what I would like to do is "borrow" some of that nook space and have it open from the kitchen side for added storage and bench space it would be in alignment with the edge of the stove work bench and the kitchen side of the island bench. (pic 2).

Our kitchen cabinetry is white with black cesarstone benchtops. Should we keep the black or use a white stone or light wood work top?

Who do we contact to see about "pushing" the wall back?

Then it is load bearing. You need advice as you will need a steel beam replacement. $$$

You need;
1. Is that wall load bearing - from original plans
2. What is it made of - plaster board versus brick
3. Carpenter or bricking, depending on 2.
4. Engineer if 1.
5. Timber would be great, especially if Australia Black Bean as a statement piece. 6. Could have open shelves above

Hi Erin Both look like they will work. I think your challenge will be to bring some depth to the front of the house . With the colour being uniform its quite flat, so I would suggest adding some awnings to the front windows. These could also be a nice feature on the front of the house adding your personality. http://www.icietla.com.au in Brisbane sell some beautiful stripes. The other option was to have a base and top scheme that helped the building look a little lighter. A great transformation which ever way you go.

We installed a skylight over shower (velux fixed) in a tiny ensuite and I would highly recommend. It looked absolutely amazing and was heavenly to shower under the sky. We only had the house for a year and sold it (about to install another skylight over shower in our new house), so I can't comment on the long term, but no mould problems or condensation drips. I think if anything the sunlight was actually helpful to dry up moisture. We live in Tasmania so I'd doubt condensation dripping would be a problem elsewhere. We had a fan installed not in the cavity with the skylight but just on the ceiling next to it. In the second bathroom we put in a skylight over bath and put an extractor in the skylight cavity as the ceiling was higher. Could not feel a draught- so I think the question of where to put fan really depends on ceiling height. Do the skylight over shower!! You will not regret it. It really takes your bathroom to another level and there are really no maintenance problems if installed properly with custom flashings. I found velux quite repellent of dirt etc, we did not need to clean after a year (one flat roof skylight, one very large sloped) and I have seen velux skylights looking great with no cleaning for 7 years plus.

Luckily, you have a great monochrome base to start with, so you can almost go wherever your imagination takes you! Hi AndrewJason, I love cavity sliders. they are there when you want them but not visible when you need the space open. Having said that they cost more, take a bit of wreckage to set up and in you WA case you will be wrecking brick walls to put them in which might be a stretch of mess too far. BUT you will need to weigh up if they are worth it in the end. I do not think the build will be too bulky in the kitchen/dining because it will be superbly practical on both sides and it maybe just a matter of what you are used to. Not sure about "Average Joe...…" we are all good at somethings, mine is plans, function, practicality, solar. Yours might be brain surgery, empathy for unwell folks, kinda or you make the best seafood lasagne in the world... we are all needed to make for a great world: and it really is that!!! Good luck with your splendid home: I think it is beautiful. And PS if you do make the best seafood anything I better have your address....!!!!!!! MK

Can you make your island and WIP bigger. Maybe remove door and wall from wip to better integrate it.

that's definitely something to consider. we were just hoping to use some space that is currently forgotten in a more functional way.

I don't think its double brick where that red arrow is. Its most likely single brick at that wall. See the double black line on your plan? Those are the double bricks

If you are only taking part of the tool area for kitchen, then you are building more support walls, than are already there. Any reputable builder can do this job. Taking out the bricks by cutting the wall, putting a flat support beam in, if required. Re plastering walls, new ceiling, architraves, power etc. I think, per metre, yes it will be expensive, because of trades still needed for such a small change. But if that change is greatly beneficial to your family, then this is worth it.

I would take up the whole tool access area for the kitchen. The kitchen is important for the family and utilised everyday. I would ask your husband to find a corner in his gym room for a desk.

Or to save the great cost, I suggest you put shelving and a bench on pantry wall. In line with the island bench. Also install a sliding door for pantry, or take door off completely.

If you build out wall from pantry, you can install a sliding barn door on that wall. With a built in cabinet facing dining room.
