Would you be put off buying a house if the neighbours were renovating?

We are considering a move but I am wondering whether the sale of our existing property would be significantly impacted by the fact that the house next door is being renovated and extended - both at the front and back, their front yard is just rubble. The works have only been going for 3 weeks, total duration will be 6 months if it goes to plan. (It is an area where lots of houses are being renovated (in fact ours really needs some renos at some point but is liveable as is). I'd be interested in people's thoughts.

better than buying next to a house that is likely to be replaced with something unknown..at least if it's a new reno the buyers are able to see what's happening...our Councils provides copies of any proposed new work near our properties or ask the neighbours for a copy of the plans for your agent to show to prospective buyers...volunteer info as they're sure to notice and if your house is likely to need future upgrades it's also useful to have info about your own property (site plans, house plans and ideas about what's likely to be approved) as new purchasers are often interested in the potential as some prefer to make their own changes so a house in liveable condition in an area that is having lots of improvements sounds very attractive to me

Treasure it for the gem of a 1940s/50s home it is, complete with glorious wrought iron work. Suggestions have been made as to how to boost the height to meet current building codes. You will regret updating the exterior for what is likely to be a one that will date quickly and be higher maintenance . It is only a matter of time until such homes are as treasured as Victorian terraces or Californian bungalows. It is an icon of its time. Accept it for what t is. Why make your house look like a fashion victim of 2019, when it stands in almost the full glory of its original period? It will also save you a fortune too! But yes, minimise the concrete! and add a garden that refects the period the house was built. Roses if you like them, with maybe a magnolia or crepe myrtle feature tree but for lower maintenance try some architectural and ground covering succulents. You could also go with edibles like feature citrus and olives for a Mediterranean feel.

My house is also built at the top of a hill, the summit and is cut into a cliff. We bought it, it was built in the 90s and the orientation is entirely wrong. The living areas face west and all bedrooms are in the east. The master is exposed to the western and the northern sunshine. It’s nice in the winter and entirely unbearable in the summer. The same goes for my living room. We take extra long holidays in the summer to avoid being at home. The home had no insulation in ceilings, and raked ceilings. So the first thing we did was remove the roof sheeting install battens to create a cavity and installed R3.5 insulation. We are also upgrading installing new windows to upgrade the glazing on the western windows and looking to put insulation in all the walls It also gets really windy, so windy. So I understand your concerns. When it gets windy the entire house shakes. So the next thing will be to improve the bracing. There is a 3-4metre clearance under our home for storage. We could do a build in under. Even with the positioning of our shed and close proximity to the home it does little to shelter from the wind. We are considered the building an “outdoor room” which would act as an alfresco with skylights, lounge, pool and kitchenette that could act as an outdoor entertainment area when weather permits. I just did a sustainable design for a client nearby. I am so jealous of her amazing home. Her land is smaller then my land and her land cost the same price as my house and land. So I am grateful for what I have.

it doesn't belong on your house and he can buy a post to stick in the ground to support the clothesline and patch and paint the hole on your wall...but, are your reno plans ready to share your reno plans with him as now could be good negotiating time but he and you must ask each other before making any other changes and i would obtain his and his builders' email details so that you can express any future concerns in writing and they'll have no excuse to do the same ..you may have been happy to allow the painted wall and the clothesline but you should expect to be asked in writing and they need to wait for written permission with specific details before any work starts..on either side of the boundary

Most people buy a house with the longer term in mind, not just the next six months. By the time you have your house on the market, the marketing campaign complete, and settlement finalised all of the dirty, messy renovation stuff that is happening next door now will be well and truly over.

If I was a savvy buyer I would think about the positives rather than negatives. It means that somebody else is prepared to sink big bucks into a renovation, so they must be sure of the potential of the area. They are likely to be long-term neighbours if they are going through a renovation. Potential buyers could see potential ideas for your house. And no developer is going to knock over a newly renovated home for townhouses.

Even so, I would try and co-ordinate your open for inspections for when there aren't tradesmen working next door.
