I agree. Leave the space empty, maybe some pots if you really need something. A house needs some empty spaces to breathe.

If you want a desk, a glass one would float and a Philip Stark ‘ghost chair’.
I would be looking for interesting storage against the smallest wall, eg white or same colour as the treads

a built in seat might be a option

I think if you want something there It needs to be playful to give the house some soul, If your kids are young a colorful play zone is one option.

The lighting you found would look fabulous, I wouldn’t add a bookcase as it could look too busy and hide your beautiful stairs, they are a work of art in themselves, with the lighting and the stairs it will certainly be a stunning feature.

Thanks all for the advice. Just thought I'd attach a couple of other shots for more context. You've all convinced me to keep it simple. Kbodman14 suggested some interesting shelving just under the landing. Thoughts? I figured the ball lights could go where the sad lamp currently is 😔

There's a small room next to the space that perhaps could have some shelving in it... Leaving the under stairs area with just the lighting..

Yes just the lighting under the stairs, you could play around with position once you get them, how good will it look at night and from that window.. stunning, shelves perfect for other room.

If the kids are naughty, u could put them in the pots under the stairs. Hehe.

There is no way I would put anything that in any way resembles a bookcase there .

I love the pots , and I'd incorporate them , but you only have to look and see ( or maybe see the irony ) -- great big picture windows looking at the wonderful greenery , and not a plant to be seen inside .

Just me , I'd do a mix of styles and cultures -- those pots , some colourful glazed terracotta ones in brighter earthtones , green leafy plants , a bamboo , a fat cactus , a tall cactus in the pots , some river rocks and some pebbles ( in a frame if you have kids ) -- almost a fusion mixed garden of contemplation . $1000 max for a subtle or bold as you wish feature . . . . . . . . . .

Micheal. By all means put shelving in facing window. Side facing lounge paint in wall colour or white and should look built in under stai, so full ht on that edge. Include a desk element too in wall colour or build into shelves a pull out desk space and all a chair to tuck in when not in use.

Go with the stairs exposed steel and get someone to build some affixed kind of shelving - this Kundig hardware exhibition could hold some ideas
