Timber Battens / Decking suggestions

Hello,

We are building this year in Hobart, Tasmania. We have some wooden feature timber battens both inside and outside of the house. We don't want something that requires a lot of upkeep externally.

Any suggestions/thoughts on best practice for this?

We are unsure of depth of colour etc. Open to suggestions. I have attached the side view for an idea of how wood is featured.

Also decking... Modwood or Hardiedeck success stories?

would love to see the "timber" external features replaced with Corten steel..solid, "earthy" no maintenance, strong and beautiful and the rusty surface outside looks great with the timber inside

I have miles of decking at two houses. All timber when put in the Australian sun will suffer. When building our beach house we decided to go for Spotted Gum and let it grey. Why fight it? We applied Cutek, and will on a regular basis. At our main house we have lots of Merabu or Quilla. Will not grey the same, and leaches lots of red stain. Cheap, but would not use again. What ever you use, use a good quality oil that seeps deep into the wood not a traditional stain/or top finishing product.

hey bekkyboo7 things to consider with aluminum doors and windows, they have lower maintenance and better weather seals..... in saying that the color is a big consideration, white is great although i generally use anodised silver, this way it often blends with the backgrounds better depending on your outlooks and views as well as it is very neutral against furnishings and coloured feature walls. anodized is a much nicer finish than powder coating as well as it has no sheen to it and looks "softer" its my design you have in the photo attached to this conversation cheers adrian

The vergola option with louvres is very expensive but also very effective as it provides so much flexibility in all types of weather. If you are outdoor people then this may be worth the cost. Coming down in cost, a climber over a pergola is also a good option depending on where you live. In a cool climate make sure the climber drops its leaves early enough so the late autumn and early winter sun comes through. Conversely, if you're in a warm/hot climate then the longer the leaves stay on the better. Some deciduous climber and trees lose their leaves quite late. Awnings are also very flexible but may not allow wet weather usage. Of course this depends on the type and size of awning. Oops, I just noticed this was originally posted in 2014. we were very happy with the original Modwood which we used for an exposed upstairs balcony (with steel framing) and a jetty for our dam and although the surface faded to a dusty brown over the years, despite severe frosts, heatwaves and the wild ducks camped on the jetty there was never any sign of rot or movement and we like the aged colour and would happily use it again..NB we used the Modwood when it was first available 20 years? ago and reading the latest info suggests that there have been improvements in Colour fastness with the newer products

Plastic wood can get really hot to walk on but shouldn’t be an issue in tas. The deco pics look lovely

DecoDeck aluminium decking is one of the coolest decks on the market - doesn't get hot like plastic. Good luck with the project :)
