When it's tricky and you can't get your head around what it could look, short of hiring someone like me (or the previous poster )who CAD's it all up, as part of the design process, if you want to do it yourself, considered drawing it up with something like 'interior design for iPad' or 'sketch up' ... As it can really help you visualise it all better ... ... is the lounge the main TV viewing area - or is that what the rumpus room is used for - and the lounge is more social zone with occasional tv watching !?!? As it might be nice to have the tv in a hidden cabinet - or hidden away in the wall you are beefing out ( although i'm not a fan of tv's above fireplace's normally ). how many are in your family, living here ?! As this will determine approx seating required for sofas/sectionals/ club chairs etc ?! You can achieve good zoning of a large space like this with the use of large area rugs - can be done on a budget if you go to a carpet warehouse and have room sized remnants whipped into large plain rugs ... The kitchen is such a great size - it's crying out for something a bit unique going on in there !! Sorry - getting all sorts of ideas !! This is such a great size place !!

Good Morning! Just thought i'd weigh in with my thoughts for you... I think that for the size of the room, you currently have too much furniture in it - in terms of seating. And the pictures don't quite show - but what is the relationship between the seating and the TV? Personally, I like a sofa and the arm chairs and would possibly consider losing one of the sofas. Pazz's suggestions are great and relevant. I would upsize the rug and purchase it in shades of blue/grey and bring out those colours in artwork and other soft furnishings such as cushions and lamp shades. Also change the orientation of the rug and coffee table to work with the room rather than fighting against it. I'm not a huge fan of wooden furniture pieces except if they are a highlight - If it was my room, i would paint the coffee table and the TV unit - there are plenty of paints on the market that don't require a massive amount of prep work - such as chalk paints. That would also soften the look. Overall - consider how you use the space currently and how that room interacts with the rest of your home as a whole. Good luck! Jo

I would suggest keeping the brick fire place with a clean up to keep the character. Agree paint the ceiling panels white however keep the beams as the are (if in good condition) to keep the character of the home. Paint the remaining walls white or light grey. The 1/2 brick white wall and timber paneling on the right side does need to come out to help you create the open plan space you are craving. The kitchen area - I'm not sure of size judging by the photo - I would suggest storage/cabinets the full length of the back wall to the windows where the dinning table is and cabinets/draws under the window also. Giving you plenty of storage for the home. I would suggest an island bench with a lower section to use as a dinning table. All your storage is in one place and allowing you to remove the storage you have across the bottom window in the lounge room. giving you more space and more light in the room. Or paint them white also. If you can remove the window coverings and replace with lighter roller blinds that disappear in the white walls or even white block out curtains. I honestly can't beat the suggestions that have been given above, but yes, de-clutter the desk area (clock, wastepaper bin), find a large print to go above the desk (this will draw the eye first), replace the desk chair with a nice upholstered chair that fits better in a lounge room something like the upholstered dining chairs that are popular at the moment http://www.westelm.com.au/mid-century-upholstered-dining-chair-velvet-h2338 (if budget is tight, even Kmart have similar?). Finally, I do think the warm earthy tones of the walls/carpet/curtains are jarring slightly with the cool white & aqua tones of your furniture. Possibly repaint the walls, ditch the cream curtains? The carpet you probably will want to leave, but I think these other colour changes would probably make enough of a difference. But that outdoor area is so lovely, I would try to bring that in, with a few indoor plants in the corner, plus mirroring some outside. Then also potentially a mirror on one of the adjacent walls will bring in light and reflect the outdoor view into the room. I wouldn't stress too much, it's a great room and settling in, tweaking and 'nesting' takes time!
