That's awful, how scary for you all.

I have heard of it before, I remember there was quite a bit about it in the media a few years ago.

When it was purchased, did you get a receipt? or did the installer give you one explaining the glass type? If it was laminated glass it will shatter (a safety feature to avoid long shards (it does look like there was a lamination film in parts>?) OR, if it was meant to be a 'tempered glas's or 'Toughened glass' (as the code recommends) then this should not have happened. Definitely check the codes (a simple BCA google search should give you a 'points' guide), and question the installer/supplier as to what has happened ok? Glad your boy is ok, this can be very scary!

Thank-you House of Dawes for your comments. Yes we did get a receipt, it was tempered glass, I have had the installer around, and I was given a lengthy lesson on glass. He had been to 3 other jobs that morn all exploding shower screens. It shouldn't happen, but it did, and does happen. This was a 6mm panel of a semi frameless shower screen. Our ensuite has a 10mm panel of frameless glass.Apparently they are more prone to exploding. Not sure what I can do here except wear the cost ( 2 months out of warranty), and get it fixed. If it is such a rare occurrence according to installer then a 5 year warranty should be given. No moving parts, no motors etc.

I would argue consumer rights say that it should be fit for not just 1 year but an undefined period that reflects the supposed longevity and cost of product. Thanks Kate, I did call our Office of Fair Trading today, and they were very helpful. I am going back to the retailer who may be able to help me chase a better outcome from the manufacturer.

Three inspections of exploding shower screens in one day !!..Give me a break...POOR QUALITY .... I have never heard of an exploding shower screen in more than 20 yrs of bathroom renovating.... Dept of Fair Trading or ASIC not fit for purpose

Something similar happened to us, however no one was in the room at the time, luckily, and it was also a full length bathroom window rather than a shower screen. I wonder if the damage would be covered by house building insurance, as ours was. It might be worth asking. Good luck!

Thank-you Mandy, unfortunately we have a $1000 excess. It should have more than 12 mth warranty. screen was 14 months old.
