And the plan for decking over entry will make for a beautiful warm entry; I love the mix of materials. I take your meaning about potential decking extending out from entry along house front and around to the back entertainment patio as possibly looking strange. But, IF you plan to also deck the entertaining patio, I don't think it would look strange having the perimeter decking narrow. But I should ask, how narrow would it be? Just as an example, we have continuous decking along the north, east and west sides of our house. The narrowest path, which is about 10 metres long, is only 92 cms wide and leads from laundry room door to master suite decking with a see-thru gate delineating the two areas....See MoreUpdate very tired front of house and streetscape
Comments (41)Hi there, I personally don't like the look of that rock wall with your home. It does nothing for it. I would get rid of it, you may even be able to sell the rock for a bit of cash. I would besser block a retaining wall in its place with posts and render this, then use your timber horizontally slated between the posts. Select a paint colour that works nice with your timber colour and carry the colour through to your house. This will also work in with your side timber fence. Also remove all the plants in the front, just because they are lovely doesn't mean they are in the right place or serve a purpose, you may be able to transplant them somewhere else in the yard. Plants: mop tops are a great feature tree and give lots of shade in summer. A hedge along the inside of the fence would look great, Lilly pilly's are good and Japanese box is tough as boots and requires little water once up a bit. Westringia, birds of paradise, hibiscus, viburnum, Murraya all take heat, depends on what look your after. My average temps in summer are 47 degrees and winter -3 & these plants survive. Yes I also agree with a path from the front to the door. Front door to house could have some timber posts added with an awning/patio to make it stand out. The timber would carry through from the front fence. Painting the brick can also give it a lift if you don't want to go modern with render. You could also paint the concrete driveway, there are some snazzy options available for this, plain or stencil. Best of luck! I'm sure it will come up a treat....See MoreModernising exterior of 90s red brick house
Comments (16)You say this is a 1990's house . Its made to look like a 1930's house at present . To make it look 'modern' would take a lot of work , and IMO destroy the character of the house . Embrace what it is , tidy it and change the focus slightly , but personally I wouldn't take off the scrolls and those little posts , or even the walkway roof . Just my opinion , but if you want modern , you sell what you have and buy a modern place in grey on grey on grey , with charcoal -- there are more than enough unique points on this house that you either embrace it or you sell it ....See Moreupdating a boring brick project home
Comments (5)It’s a tricky one @oklouise. The stencilled concrete wraps around the left hand side of the house where it becomes our entertainment area so while the driveway would look great dark and was my initial plan, it would mean the entire thing would have to be dark as their are no breaks in the concrete and as a house that was lets say unsympathetically designed for the block, having the paving dark in our entertainment area would make the whole space too dark. Definitely need to do something with that bloody gate! Might see if hubby can cut the metal to make it straight....See MoreC P
