Plantation shutters: Polymer vs timber
Comments (13)Have any of to guys looked at the toxic properies of poly shutters . They have to use something as a bonding agent and most times it is formaldahide ! Timber is organic and most companies that bring them in have to make sure that the companies that manufacture have the forestry stewardship cerificate which means that the timber used is renewable . Timber is far lighter and can span wider . Remember one thing , houses are made from timber and rubbish bins are made from poly . To the doubters and not sure shutter buyers make sure that you choose a timber product that is 100% that species of timber , not blended timbers and to the ones that are contemplating using poly shutters beware as i truly beleive that they will be the next asbestos scare . They are not good for your health . Always try and go organic guys , even with your food ....See MoreRoller shutter removal and other general 80's makeover reversals
Comments (9)Thanks for your advice, you have some great points. I agree, we don't want to go crazy at the start - just do the bits that we need to make the house safe/comfortable to live in (eg fix electrical, put in heating and cooling) plus do the basics to make it look "nice" inside (paint walls, polish floorboards and new light fittings like you suggested). I'm sure this will end up costing quite a bit anyway so this might be it for now! We also found today a few hidden surprises that will require attention asap, like asbestos vinyl in between the carpet and floorboards unfortunately and the fact that there used to be chimney hearths in the bedrooms that they have just replaced with cheap pine boards (not matching the rest of the boards). Having a nice garden design will also make a huge difference I think. You are right, there is lots of concrete and a bit of grass - very different from what we are used to (coming from an established garden) so I'm longing for some trees there already!...See MoreHas anyone had experience with security plantation shutters?

Comments (8)Plantation shutters are visually busy and reduce your water view by 50% even when fully open. It looks like you have the old style aluminium frame windows and single glazing. I don't know if losing heat in the winter, or getting too hot in the summer is a problem in your part of the world, but aluminium framed windows are excellent at transferring the external temperature inside as they conduct heat. If this is a problem then you can't beat traditional lined, full length curtains and a pelmet. Ensure the track is much wider than the window so that you can pull the curtains fully back, clear of the window, to enjoy the views. Traditional curtains give you the most flexibility for light control, heat control and privacy when required. I would look for a plain block of colour (not patterned fabric), with very simple understated pelmets for an elegant and flexible solution that will work for all of your seasons.
