Hello. Clients actually sourced some natural reclaimed timber themselves, I think it was out in the blue mountains. Really beautiful piece. Yes, timber does need upkeeping. Just like a timber deck. Every few months you should stain/lacquer it again, to keep it looking fresh and sealed. Downsides are really just the maintenance. Hope that helps :)
Thanks so much for the update. It’s so confusing ... I can’t work out whether stain and lacquer is okay for an island bench (with no plans to cut food directly on the wood) or whether it needs to be food safe oil. I would vastly prefer the look here if safe enough.
