Please help me: which type of tiling style / drop in bath is this?

I'm amount to start a bathroom renovation, and have decided on my layout and purchased lots of the items (tiles, toilet, vanity etc). The last thing to choose and buy is the built in/drop in/inset bath which should be an easy choice, right? After all, a bath is a bath!

Wrong! I've since learnt there are a heap of different styles of these baths, including island, two tile flange, three tile flange and four tile flange.

I'm trying to create a shower over bath just like this one (albeit with different tiles). I know this means I need a tile flange on atleast 2 sides (but can also consider 4 sides).

I really like how the bath is set almost flush with the tiles - and the white lip doesn't sit too high over the grey tiles.

There's also this style - but the bath edge here is much more pronounced than the previous one. Is this just a tiling style, or a difference in the actual tub selected?

What I would like to avoid is something like this where the bath bath edge protrudes quite alot.

I would love if anyone could share their experience with me. Is this a difference in baths, or installation/tiling? If so - what do I tell my builder/plumber to get what I'm looking for.

You will need a bath with three or four tile flanges to match the one in the first photo. It has to do with complying with the building regulations for waterproofing and protecting the timber framing that is under the tiles. If the edge of the bath where it meets the tiles is not properly protected from water seeping through then concealed wet rot could start, and eventually everything will need to be ripped out, and built again. Sometimes even the timber floor joists under the bath rot out and need to be replaced.

So I would do your research and co-ordinate carefully with your builder to ensure that the details are correctly built. Some builders will not go to the trouble of getting it right as they don't care if your bath falls through a rotten floor in ten years time.

Quite often your choices in the bathroom should also take into account the long term functionality of the bathroom, rather than just the aesthetics.

If your tile comes down onto the edge of the bath then that edge needs a tile flange, which sits behind the tile. Showers are the same.

Oh C'mon V Richards...every epoch has its treasures. B4 you make a mad run for it stop a while and consider the period and the reasons for the style...it can be extremely enlightening....unless its not the period you want to escape from but from some of the opinions. I spent many years of my youth outside of Australia living surrounded by old ruins in Europe. I forgot what it was like here. When finally I returned to Australia and found myself living in some of the 60s and 70s places..I found much to admire and wonder about. I may not have fallen in love with much of it but there was a certain mistique and a feel that I can still conjure when talking about certain places. Not saying that it was all romantic and pleasant but it conveyed something of the era and the kind of Aussie from those days.

@mlk01, You are right about the message button, I have it on my profile but no one else seems to so that's odd! If you click on my profile for example, you will see on the top line right beside the profile picture: Your house, Ideasbook, Bookmarks, Activities, Messages. In fact I remember that when anyone typed a reply like I'm doing now, you used to be able to click a "private" button, which meant only the person you were typing to saw your comment. Perhaps Houzz can answer these anomalies?? I'm not on Facebook or Twitter, never got into it and have no reason to do so anytime soon ha-ha As for talking privately to someone, you could post your email address here as could oklouise and delete it whilst you are still able to edit, as I've done once in the past. Just not sure how long the edit feature lasts.

yes to all, we did have the tiles professionally sealed, but sealing is not a cure all in my experience but I'm sure it helps considerable . my wife does buy those hand made goats milk styles soaps etc and I don't imagine there is anything more testing for stone, and yes it does mark. The Grey ( bane of my existence )granite much more so than the beige travertine ) I must admit though, the kids bathroom was almost non existent as one has sensitive skin and uses pump pack. I would also imagine climate, airing/ sunlight, volume of use and the time you have to manage it would also be contributing factors. We are way short on time and they don't get the attention they deserve, so I would suggest asking around, others may manage it better and it not be an issue. If your only doing your bathroom you may consider the risk factor not worth it for the volume, but for me, the advantage of travertine in the rest of the house far out weighs any marking issue in the showers, and wont stop me from using it again. To be honest when we sold the last house I just took to the shower with one of those paint scrapers with the razor in the end and most of it came off and it didn't detract from the look of the house. Sorry i have probably only muddied the waters even more, good luck with it.

Nice result and a very hard choice between the 2! For those who are interested, you do need to have a handrail that runs the whole length of the flight. We have vertical brushed aluminium rods on the steps that start from the 5th tread (to keep a sense of openness) but needed a wall rail as well. We chose the rod option over glass for something different and with far less maintenance. I think it all comes down to individual taste and what's important to you in terms of overall design

Thankyou for your replies, i should have been a bit more clear. I do realise I need the tile flange for the sides where the tiles come down for waterproofing, but what I can’t work out is the visible side you can see when you’re looming at it. Its important for it to be appropriately waterproofed, but none of these 3 options have the tiles sitting onto the top Of the bath so that’s where I’m a bit stuck on how to achieve the aesthetic I want
