One of the best way to compare hanging space is to look at the lineal metres of clothes rod that you currently use, and compare it with the number of lineal metres proposed. Take into account that when you move from your old house to your new one you will probably thin the number of clothes you have and get rid of the stuff you haven't worn in ages. Getting rid of unwanted clothes is much cheaper than building a bigger robe!

The photo above is from Houzz (not one of my projects) and it is interesting to note that the upper clothes rod seems to be bowing slightly with the weight of the jackets, so make sure you are using the best hardware available.

Hi Louise, This robe sounds to me like heaps of space. Yes I get that it is a walk thru from bedroom to ensuite which I really like as it adds an extra level of privacy to ensuite. at 1740 wide it allows plenty of width for shelves and hanging all down one side with NO dead corners. depending how high ceilings are try three hanging rails above each other for shirts, blouses and summer/winter clothes and the monkey suits, ball gowns!! Some long hanging each and shelves...sounds to me as tho there will be plenty of room. I like Dr Retro's comments: toss out before moving is cheaper than building more robe. Also make sure the racks and shelves can take the weight. I have seen the pull down racks but they are very heavy to push up and think a step stool and fixed rods better for the few occasions you might use it. With that length and scope you may not need three rungs. Interested to see how you go...Cheers Margot

I think I've managed to upload a photo now (stuff the PDF - I'll just take a photo of the print out, haha). It has been confirmed the length of the hanging space would eb 2.5m and the drawers/shelves 1.1m.

I wondering if there would be enough space to put a shallower set of shelves on the opposing wall for shoes, bits and pieces etc. If it was a 35cm dept, that would leave about 75cm walking space in the middle which seems ok for a wardrobe I think?

We don't quite know what the ceiling height will be just yet as we are having issues with the roof line, but I think the more I hear about them, the more I agree about potentially avoiding the pull down racks.

Do you think there's enough space for a shoe shelf on the other side? (obviously leaving room for the shelving unit at the end to pull out).

Ha Louise, You're doing well: it is all a bit tricky! lay out the space in a smallish room to get a feel for it. imagine you are getting dressed and see if it works for you both. 750 mm is narrow but if you are not big people it should work. That looks to me like it is shown as a brick veneer or db brick wall so potentially you might gain another 100 mm which might make all the difference. Also maybe put in the hanging and the end shelving (I would go with long hanging in the dead corner) and the shelves across the end and put show boxes or something along the other side. See how often you kick it, step on it or if it works well for you. Trial and error. Cheers Margot

As a general comment. I would prioritise a larger wardrobe space over a larger ensuite for a couple. It's easy to stagger your bathroom use so the ensuite works for you both. But clothes must hang all the time. Too small a wardrobe will be a problem you can't escape. Whereas a tiny ensuite is easy to cope with especially if you have a main bathroom anyway.

While a double vanity is a goregous luxury, is it really worth losing hanging space for?
