What is the best way to clean shower grout?

Eveyone knows the "best" way to clean dirty, stained or mouldy shower grout. But what method really stands up to the test?

Some of the ones we've heard over the years include:

Scrub dirty grout using warm water and a stiff-bristled brush.
Spray with equal parts vinegar and warm water and wait several minutes.
Apply a baking soda paste and spray with vinegar.
Pour hydrogen peroxide onto the grout.
Apply oxygen bleach for up to 15 minutes.
Use chlorine bleach sparingly on grout.
Steam clean the worst of grout stains.

My hot tip is don't leave your bathroom uncleaned for weeks so mould can take a hold in your grout. It has to be there a long time to leave a stain. If you clean your bathroom each week with a grout brush you will never have a mould stain there. Mould actually takes several days to a week to turn black so you'd have to be leaving your bathroom unclean for at least a fortnight for it to ever look like this.

I've lived in many rental properties that rarely had new bathrooms in them. I've never seen grout stains as bad as this.

Toilet gel, along each grout line wait 10 minutes then scrub with a grout brush then wash off. Otherwise steam clean.

Your question to an outside kennel, it will need to be tough. A GSD can chew almost anything , I think Canberra weather is way too cold to have Manny as an outside dog. Buy a extra large crate and keep him inside. Crate train your pup, they will learn to toilet train quicker there is a lot of info out there to google. GSD's need to be part of the family or there can be behavioural issues. Are you renting? is this the reason for the kennel outside?

Post grouting, and grout drying a fine layer of grout remains. It is easier to remove the next day, by wiping with a soft disposable cloth ( blue roll about $ 14 ) change cloth frequently. I it has been on there for some time, check with tiler if he/she sealed the tiles. If the tiles are not sealed...Tile shops sell grout remover, need to take care and clean each tile..to avoid the grout

Totally agree with Austere Hamlet if someone let their shower get as filthy as picture 1 no amount of cleaning solutions will help they will just go back to never cleaning just filthy 🤮🤮

Can anyone explain to me why white silicone sealer can't be used in place of grout?

If you masked either side of the grout line, inject it into the gap, and smooth into a concave shape with a finger wouldn't it be as good or better than hard inflexible grout?

Silicone is supposed to be used where the floor meets the wall anyway,. Not that builders necessarily know that, or maybe they just don't take the time?

Jeff Leake - they are used for different purposes, one is to seal awkward gaps and the other is a overall put it on and leave. Silicone is messier and more expensive and to use it the way you suggested would most likely take four times as long to place not including clean up. This in turn bumps the bill up four times. This along with other reasons i.e discolouration, cleaning, longevity, ease of use the cost of silicon vs grout, masking tape is why tilers don't do it this way. The more time they spend on one job means the less jobs they can do in a week which loses profits. Add on to this with the more costs involved upfront for a tiler versus what the client pays (sometimes clients hold out on payment) means they go into debt and cant pay there suppliers and workers. Hopefully this answers your question.

Macy-jean - Builders know a bit more than you might think and because a product says it does something does not mean it actually does it well or better than something else. They also know if it can be best used somewhere else with a better result. They always take time if something can cut down on time and money and can outlast another product in durability. 7 year warranty on builds means the less time they have to go back and fix something the more they save. Believe me they are always looking for something that cuts down on costs and time. They are also approached by different companies willing to give out freebies or competitive prices to try there product too and encouraged to endorse and switch other tradies to them also. This could be a longer conversation as there is more that goes into it but the short of it is Time and Costs.

Grout is one thing, but how do you clean mould that has developed underneath and in silicone??? Scrubbing hard seems to break down the silicone??
