What are the warning signs of a leaking shower?

I know there is a lot of speculation around whether leak detection technology is reliable. Waterproofers and tilers who have been in the industry for many years say its not, instead relying on their experience and knowlege rather than technology.

As the leak detection experts (we like to think) you'd be hard pressed to find a warning sign of a leaking shower we haven't come across. Some of the most common indicators include:

  1. The carpet is wet or smelly.
  2. The paint is bubbling on walls.
  3. There are visible gaps in floor and wall joints.
  4. The floor or wall grout is missing.
  5. The silicone is dirty, black or mouldy.
  6. There are discoloured tiles or grout in or around the shower.
  7. The timber door frames or surrounding architraves are swollen.
  8. The bathroom door begins to jam.
