House type - QLD Brick Double Storey Mid Century Modern (1979)

Needing some deisgn ideas as I want to try and make it match the house but as long as it is not out of place.

Reno type is a full reno including window, lighting, toilet, everything.

Size: 1.6W x 3.3L

Styles I like are minimal a0 cluttered look.

Take note at the bronze/copper type style of the shower door which I think is a good reflection of that era and if you know anything that looks good with colours like that would be a great suggestion

I like the exposed brick but I think it may need to be covered to get rid of those ugly copper pipes

So please any colour schemes / style of tiles / colours any suggestions would be great as this is driving me crazy trying to pick something. I am really bad with design co-ordination.

I assume the rest of the house is a similar style , and mainly white and off-white walls ?

The copper pipe up the brick I would get your plumber to change to polished UNPAINTED copper , and make it a feature , especially if you want to keep the shower doors .

I'd change the window sill to a stained darker wooden one , maybe even 25-30mm thick , depending on whether it goes under the window -- a lighter brick with the darker wood and polished copper would look different but in a good way . The toilet and cistern would even suit .

BUT the floor tiles have to go -- I'd go a rougher matt charcoal . The shower door I'd keep and polish , but get rid of the extremely dated glass ( yes , I know its period , but . . . . . . ) and go clear , or flat opaque . Some of the tiles in the shower look okay , but I'd use it as a chance to strip the tiles , inspect the waterproofing behind it , change to a mixer , and re-tile , If you think you can 'get away' with just doing that wall ( bit hard to tell from the pics ) go for it -- re-use some tiles maybe , or redo in a very similar style .

There doesn't appear to be a wash basin -- you can get some quite nice slim ones , with matching dark wooden cabinets . With copper taps, or a copper mixer ? I assume it is possible to get a copper toilet roll holder too -- stick to that theme , especially if you want to keep the shower doors . There may be a basin outside that room of course , but I can't see one ?

I'd go for way more modern squarer skirting , maybe in a dark charcoal stain to tie in with the tiles , window sill and wash basin cabinet if you need one .

Copper light shades are trendy , and tie in with the rest of the fittings , but also , for example , 4 lower power downlights as an alternative , would also be a sensible update .

There's then only a couple of part walls to do , and I'd probably stick with white or off-white , unless you have another room in a different colour theme that you want to 'reference' .

Simple and clean never fails. Frameless shower screen, chrome fittings and a tile you can live with for a decade. Any kind of statement feature, make sure it's easily removable like mirrors, a paint colour etc. Expensive stuff, keep it classic.

Suzineedsahouse, what is the era or character of the house you have moved into, because perhaps that will influence design style regardless of size? Also, if you have been knocking out walls is it likely to be more open plan?? I moved from a small 1960's era granny flat into an as-small Art Deco 1940's apartment and found I went with more classic furniture with the second place because it just suited the aesthetic of high ceilings, floorboards, wide skirting boards, fireplace, ceiling roses etc. Having said that, I live in a block of 6 apartments, and I have seen the other apartments decked out completely differently (all of similar layout), from really modern, to mid-century, also one with a real retro art vibe, and they all looked great and seemed to suit the space fine. So maybe go with your taste in the end??

For those still reading this thread. We just recently completed a bathroom reno in almost identical sized space though turned the other way. A lot of reflection in the photos sorry but there is a lot of glass and mirror. A cavity slider, while an added big expense, made the whole thing possible. To create the space I used the adjoining separate toilet room for the 1200 x 900 shower and shallow tall cabinet on the left and gained a closet in the hall outside with the rest of that corner. I also recessed the towel rail which helped give room to the shower entrance and not stick out in front of the loo. Wall hung vanity and toilet. Porcelain wood planks on floor with underfloor heating and also used in shower base. Excuse the towels, they are not my normal ones ! It was a big decision about joining the rooms and whether to keep the bath / shower but I think it paid off. There is just the two of us and it's a real pleasure to use and no longer feels like "standing room only"

Thanks siriuskey for your suggestions. I don't really know what style my taste/style of house is really. I like the simplicity of mid century furniture and have a mid century Parker sideboard. Other than that, the house is a bit of a blank canvas at the moment. (the kitchen is fairly modern though with almost white glass splash back, white cupboards, and stone bench tops that are in a colour like Caesarstone Osprey (but are essastone). I do like things from the late 1950's/1960's.....and I like Audrey Hepburn. I also like the Parisian type black n white art from that era. (but I also like naive art - big colour artworks of people or animals that look like they have almost been painted by a child). If I had the money I would buy a high ceiling mid-century home like they have in USA (a modern yet mid-century Brady Bunch style home). My house is a 1962 chamfer board on concrete posts and batterns around the bottom and currently just has satin polished mixed hardwood timber floors throughout. Most of the walls are either natural white as in the study or snowy mountain quarter strength (and in smallest bedroom - half strength russian toffee). Because I am always scared that things will date if they follow trends too much, I always seem to do fairly conservative or timeless things in house renovations and rely on the furniture and accessories to add colour and style. (I like the idea of renovations and the ripping out of old stuff to create something new, but I really don't like have to make all the creative decisions etc along the way)......so I do appreciate it when I get advice from others. I have printed your suggestions and will have a look at them. (I guess the barn door look is actually similar in concept to some of the timber veneer sliding doors seen in midcentury homes). All the 'sad' and disapppinted people commenting here; those who 'dislike this and that, or want to see 'character' retained, etc, etc, ought to get out more; to go see the world. As far as I can see, much of the architectual integrity HAS been retained. Is this 'sadness' a Victorian thing?; must we save all the old buildings, all the trees, the whole planet - from what? For what? Despite the hype, we're not likely to tip the place off it's axis anytime soon. Likewise with older houses; give them fresh breath, i say. Using whatever our creative and forward-looking brains can offer us is a positive solution to all things. My recently renovated heart agrees! This cosmetic reno' is nothing short of a grand improvement on its' former presentation; it's lighter, brighter and far more livable; refecting the owners outlook on life, I'd say. So, to all the 'experts', to those who want to pretend that they'd prefer to live in the dark ages - say, the 70's which were notoriously bland and most everything built then was built to a tough budget. ( I remember building in the 70's, in the 80s', renovating and building in the 90s', the nouties and still renovating now; i just can't seem to leach it out of my DNA as I complete the restoration of a 1930's Cal' Bung', one runied in the 70s' by some hapless 'handyman' who insatlled a plastic Chub and added a Victorian bull-nose verandah! All my homes turned out differently as my tastes and budget changed. Beginning in 1974 when I painted the front door of my 60's 2-bedder, bright yellow, the weatherboards 'Conifer'; the darkest posible green, now cracking in the sun, no doubt! Or has it been renovated by some 21st century house-hipsters? Then in 1976 I chose Avo' toilets, basins and bath ! Used native timbers, unpainted T & G everywhere, too ) I pulled out 'space wasting' french doors and installed open arches ! And wall-papered everything that didn't move. Not every so-called 'mid-century' home is a classic, or is worth preserving. Like this one probably was, they were pretty darned ordinary, particularly compared to those of the Victorian, Edwardian, the Art Deco and Californian Bungalow styles before them; all of which HAD definable chararcter, had enduring stlye; and are much sought-after and highly valued for having it laid, thickly, throughout. 70s' era homes were / are lacking wholly in character; and they lacked space, lacked insulation, lacked lots of design and comfort amenity we all want and deserve today. They're, nevertheless, given a new and longer life when younger eyes and energy are applied to their renovation, design and decor. Good on them!

1. Strip fixtures , tiles and skirtings . 2. Remove right hand wall ( if not asbestos) 3. Have plumber and electrician move wires and pipes internally and install pipes for small basin ( about 200/ 250 mm . 4. Resheet wall and sheet over the brick . 5 . Have waterproof membrane installed. 6. Tiles and fixtures .
  All shower screens were not bronze , as there was aluminium, gold and white . Some screens from those years were clear without the ugly wire reinforcing . Go for whichever colour you like and maybe a semi-frameless if you like to see the metal . As said plain tiles would look better on the floor and walls . Blinds from that time were often coloured patterns , toilet brushes coloured plastic , tap handles too .

Sorry that matt tile photo slipped in . Photos of bathrooms from 1982 that I will be renovating . We built this and have just bought the house back after 20 years . All of the original tiles and vanities were in place . The only change was my kitchen bright yellow bench tops and white blinds were gone . I will be asking for help soon with the kitchen .
