House type - QLD Brick Double Storey Mid Century Modern (1979)

Needing some deisgn ideas as I want to try and make it match the house but as long as it is not out of place.

Reno type is a full reno including window, lighting, toilet, everything.

Size: 1.6W x 3.3L

Styles I like are minimal a0 cluttered look.

Take note at the bronze/copper type style of the shower door which I think is a good reflection of that era and if you know anything that looks good with colours like that would be a great suggestion

I like the exposed brick but I think it may need to be covered to get rid of those ugly copper pipes

So please any colour schemes / style of tiles / colours any suggestions would be great as this is driving me crazy trying to pick something. I am really bad with design co-ordination.

I assume the rest of the house is a similar style , and mainly white and off-white walls ?

The copper pipe up the brick I would get your plumber to change to polished UNPAINTED copper , and make it a feature , especially if you want to keep the shower doors .

I'd change the window sill to a stained darker wooden one , maybe even 25-30mm thick , depending on whether it goes under the window -- a lighter brick with the darker wood and polished copper would look different but in a good way . The toilet and cistern would even suit .

BUT the floor tiles have to go -- I'd go a rougher matt charcoal . The shower door I'd keep and polish , but get rid of the extremely dated glass ( yes , I know its period , but . . . . . . ) and go clear , or flat opaque . Some of the tiles in the shower look okay , but I'd use it as a chance to strip the tiles , inspect the waterproofing behind it , change to a mixer , and re-tile , If you think you can 'get away' with just doing that wall ( bit hard to tell from the pics ) go for it -- re-use some tiles maybe , or redo in a very similar style .

There doesn't appear to be a wash basin -- you can get some quite nice slim ones , with matching dark wooden cabinets . With copper taps, or a copper mixer ? I assume it is possible to get a copper toilet roll holder too -- stick to that theme , especially if you want to keep the shower doors . There may be a basin outside that room of course , but I can't see one ?

I'd go for way more modern squarer skirting , maybe in a dark charcoal stain to tie in with the tiles , window sill and wash basin cabinet if you need one .

Copper light shades are trendy , and tie in with the rest of the fittings , but also , for example , 4 lower power downlights as an alternative , would also be a sensible update .

There's then only a couple of part walls to do , and I'd probably stick with white or off-white , unless you have another room in a different colour theme that you want to 'reference' .

Simple and clean never fails. Frameless shower screen, chrome fittings and a tile you can live with for a decade. Any kind of statement feature, make sure it's easily removable like mirrors, a paint colour etc. Expensive stuff, keep it classic.

Suzineedsahouse, what is the era or character of the house you have moved into, because perhaps that will influence design style regardless of size? Also, if you have been knocking out walls is it likely to be more open plan?? I moved from a small 1960's era granny flat into an as-small Art Deco 1940's apartment and found I went with more classic furniture with the second place because it just suited the aesthetic of high ceilings, floorboards, wide skirting boards, fireplace, ceiling roses etc. Having said that, I live in a block of 6 apartments, and I have seen the other apartments decked out completely differently (all of similar layout), from really modern, to mid-century, also one with a real retro art vibe, and they all looked great and seemed to suit the space fine. So maybe go with your taste in the end??

Things are ticking along . We have a whole lot of long skinny flush-mounted LED taillights -- they won't be fitted until we take Frankie off the road to re-paint , as the existing lights come off , and these ones will need holes cut , the exterior repainted , then these lights bonded ( glued ) in . The Mercedes seats have had new certified mounts made ( being a safety item , we spent about $150 getting them certified -- keeps it legal , although there are literally thousands of vehicles out there that have had seats changed , and no certs ) and we made little 'boxes' that have walnut tops , and all the controls for the electric seats are in these ( on Merc cars , they are on the doors , but our auto sparky has made new mini wiring looms ) . We dropped the seats to the upholsterer last week , so in the next month or so they will be recovered -- a sort of bone/cream leather for the surrounds , and red leather with diamond stitching up the middles . This is almost what my cab looks like , mine has 1980's Falcon or similar bucket seats in a grey vinyl . I assume that was done so that there is only the 2 seats , and you can get through to the back , whereas in the pic with 3 seats , you can't . My interior is the same colours -- 3 different charcoal/grey tones on the dash , then a black on the doors ( why , I have no idea -- I would have thought charcoal would have been better ? ) . Once the seats are back and fitted , I am tempted to get the door cards redone -- do a padded charcoal vinyl that matches one of the dash colours , but do a 'scallop' from the rear of each door in the lighter leather , then a red maybe 150mm wide scallop in the middle . I feel that will tie in the doors , the dash and the seats better . The booth seating ( table and chairs basically ) in the rear will get done the same cream/bone and red leather , to tie it in a bit more . Which then brings up 1 problem . You may have noticed I have used a downloaded pic , and I was going to post a few 'before' pics of the cab and the rear , so you can see it in its 90's wooden and tacky lino glory , but that turns out to be a problem . All the 'before' pics I have are ones that the last owner e-mailed to me . I downloaded them all , they are still on my computer , I can look at them no problem . BUT for some reason , they aren't JPG's -- they show as 'Google Chrome Files' , and I can't work out if I can post them here -- I've tried but nothing happens . Are there any experts that know how to post these 'files' ( pictures ) ?

I'll tell you what -- I love 75% of the bathroom -- that rustic style is different enough , and well enough done , to be different but great ! Then the tiles and cupboard doors let it down -- try and stick to the rustic styles there too would be my thoughts . The kitchen looks to have good bones , obviously the benchtop has to go , and maybe a bit of colour and new flooring , but it seems to flow okay , and looks great . I'd probably keep the stainless sink , but onyx marble benchtops would be classy , add more modern tiles and/or a splashback ( depending on colours , how about just basic white square 150 x 150 tiles , with a horizontal top row of black or red or orange subway tiles on their sides ? The lounge , in comparison , is all over the place . Light wood , purple carpet , and ( shiver ) a faded look on the coffee table . Take it outside and shoot it , burn it , it's just wrong ! The lighter wood panel might work , or maybe stain it dark , paint it white -- it depends on carpet tones . A wheat colour carpet , for example , with mid reddy brown stain wall , the bricks under the fire , it would look a bit rustic but with a tinge of class ! So what about changing the rooms ? Here's a quick idea -- The main 'rustic' bathroom could be turned into an en-suite for the 'upstairs; bedroom ( I assume that is the master ? ) , through a walk-through robe . The downstairs bedroom seems to have a shower and toilet ( almost its own en-suite ) but possibly keep the 'direct' door to the upper bathroom , as well as an entry from the upper bedroom , so the bath can be used by everyone if need be . You also have a seperate toilet there too , and the laundry is okay -- you'll spoend money doing one under the house , but not really gain much space , because of the door into the laundry ( I assume that door is useful , but what it does it makes enlarging the kitchen , or moving the bathroom more difficult ) . In other words , no real gain . It looks and sounds like it works okay -- why spend $$$ that aren't needed to be spent ? Just some minor stuff , maybe some furniture , Spend $30k and it will be getting close to what you are after IMO .

To me , you are looking at things the wrong way around -- essentially you are asking can I keep the aesthetic but go for a more contemporary vibe ( basically , can I go more modern but keep the tiles ) ; I think you should be asking will these tiles work with something more contemporary , or will you just be making compromises ? Basically , if you are going for a clean 60's vibe like dreamers 2 pics , it will wotk , but to go with modern cabinetry , appliances , fittings , lighting and the like -- you run the very real possibility of making a mess IMO .

1. Strip fixtures , tiles and skirtings . 2. Remove right hand wall ( if not asbestos) 3. Have plumber and electrician move wires and pipes internally and install pipes for small basin ( about 200/ 250 mm . 4. Resheet wall and sheet over the brick . 5 . Have waterproof membrane installed. 6. Tiles and fixtures .
  All shower screens were not bronze , as there was aluminium, gold and white . Some screens from those years were clear without the ugly wire reinforcing . Go for whichever colour you like and maybe a semi-frameless if you like to see the metal . As said plain tiles would look better on the floor and walls . Blinds from that time were often coloured patterns , toilet brushes coloured plastic , tap handles too .

Sorry that matt tile photo slipped in . Photos of bathrooms from 1982 that I will be renovating . We built this and have just bought the house back after 20 years . All of the original tiles and vanities were in place . The only change was my kitchen bright yellow bench tops and white blinds were gone . I will be asking for help soon with the kitchen .
