Need help re high gloss or matte, white or beige

We are moving into a new apartment project . The kitchen, dining area and living room are all one long , relatively narrow open space. One entire wall is the sliding doors to a sunny porch .

I have chose beige / light honey glossy large floor made of "granite-porcelain .

I am debating what cabinet colors to choose -- the cabinets will be ultra-modern, no handles. The sink, ovens and hob will be stainless steel.

White -- high gloss OR white - matte OR beige - high gloss OR beige matte . Counters and splash back will most probably be Caeasarstone in a contrasting color. If cabinets are beige, probably white; if the cabinets are white, then a sand color counter and backsplash.

Sooo -- gloss or matte, white or beige ?

It really comes down to personal preference as it is your home. If it was mine I would probably go Matt White. However, with most new apartments a design professional is usually engaged to draw together three or four neutral colour schemes that will have wide appeal, and are designed not to offend, so all potential buyers can find one they like. I suggest you go back to your developer and see if sample boards (or brochures) were made, and make your own decision from the photos and samples supplied. There won't be a "wrong" choice, just a range of right choices, and working out which one suits you, your lifestyle and your existing furniture best. Nobody else can tell you that.

Your choice but gloss kitchens do definately date a kitchen as it's a highly specific fashion. My last rental property had high gloss cabinets and they showed every fingerprint on the cabinets which was a real pain. Each time I wiped the cabinet doors I then had to go back over them with a dry lint free cloth to make sure they dried without smears. Because they were two-pack and not laminate doors they also chipped on the edges and looked awful as it was a dark gloss and you could clearly see the substrate in every chip.

The laminate kitchens I've used have all been much friendlier to a high traffic area prone to use and abuse of the cabinets.

Since your floor is already high gloss I wouldn't compete with that on the cabinets as well. Better to let the floor be the star of that show. You are also planning on an engineered stone counter which will presumably be relatively glossy as well. Sometimes an effect is alluring because it's the focal point of the room. If the entire room were gloss surfaces then none of it gets to stand out and draw the eye.

I'm sure there are plenty of people that have somehow slipped but I suspect it would more likely be if someone was walking in the bathroom with socks on but whatever the reason, it has been considered for years that high gloss tiles are dangerous in what is called a wet area but I can't disagree with you that a mat is all that is needed to stop from slipping with wet feet but of course people have slipped in the bathtub too because it's so slippery so the jury might still be out as to how to make a bathroom totally safe. I think it's just a suggestion based on some kind of trials and my theory is more hand rails where possible.

Hi Tina, thanks for posting, it is all looking great. Shame about the panelling, but sometimes these things happen for a reason. It is great the armoire matches the doors so well when they are all on one wall, but I don't think you need to have the bed and side tables matching, especially when they are on another wall. My issue with painting furniture, while I love it, is the maintenance. It does chip over time and becomes one more thing to paint. I don't know what the timber is in your furniture but another possible option, especially to give you the coastal vibe is to lime it. To do this successfully, you will need to sand all the existing stain off it and go back to the raw timber. The darker the original timber, the less limed look you will get so bear that in mind too. I did an old bunk bed up that had seen better days, for my grands bedroom. It was a dark red wood, but with 4 coats of stain I got the look I was after which was that driftwood/coastal look. The whole thing looks totally new again. Sorry I can't post a photo as this function no longer works for me. Have a look at the Feast Watson range of liming stains, they have some gorgeous soft colours as well, but they let the timber show through rather than having the solid painted look. It is a very easy product to use, it dries quickly - I did the 4 coats over 2 days effortlessly. The hard work is in the sanding.

Hi Adriana, You can have whatever you want and works with your style. If you go with tiles then invest the extra money in epoxy grout that will make cleaning a great deal easier - regardless of what colour/style you go for. Dark grout with white tiles is quite modern and makes cleaning grout a little easier - personally, I don't favour it but that's just personal taste. I would check the ease of cleaning on any matt tile. To bring in warmth to your kitchen (as black and white can be a bit stark sometimes) look at bringing some colour in - even metallics in silver, bronze or copper or even opalescent tiles can be gorgeous and can also help bounce light in a subtle way back into your room while giving you a luxury look with depth and interest. Go to your tile supplier and ask for samples so that you can take them home and put them in the space and get a sense of how they'll work - sometimes the way they look away from the tile shop is completely different to how they look in the shop. It is probable that your hall will continue to be dark, and that the lights will need to be left on, even once you have painted the timber-work. Perhaps check out some options for improving solar access - Velux sky windows, solartubes or Illume fibre-optics. Given the cost you will be looking at to paint = sanding prep, 2 x coats of sealer, 2-3 x coats of paint + labour (if no diy)......would you consider a wallpaper?? leave the timber architrave and wallpaper over the panel with a neutral-white seagrass wallpaper ??
